Dear Colleagues,
This week is the Mental Health Foundation’s Mental Health Week. Their mission is to help people understand, protect and sustain their mental health. Prevention is at the heart of what they do, because the best way to deal with a crisis is to prevent it from happening in the first place. They have produced some resources for schools which you may like to access, Connect with Nature School Pack | Mental Health Foundation.
With the Prime Minister’s news conference last night and the relaxing of some restrictions from 17 May, Education and Public Health colleagues will continue to work with all schools and settings as new guidance emerges. We will need to manage communications with parents and our young people that whilst changes in society there may remain safety measures in schools. Although we know that face masks will no longer be required in secondary schools in classrooms at the discretion of the headteacher, and should still be used in communal areas if social distancing can not be maintained.
To support mental health, let us continue to be kind, open minded and connected,
Best wishes,
Phil

Reception Baseline Assessment update
In response to the 2017 primary assessment consultation, the government announced plans to introduce a statutory reception baseline assessment (RBA) in autumn 2020. Due to the challenges faced by schools because of COVID-19, statutory introduction of the RBA has been postponed to autumn 2021. Instead, all schools had the opportunity to sign up to the RBA early adopter year in autumn 2020.
The RBA will be statutory in schools from September 2021. Further information about the RBA can be found in the information leaflet.
The RBA will be an activity-based assessment of pupils’ starting points in:
- language, communication and literacy
- mathematics
The RBA assessment framework provides an overview of what the assessment is and how it will be carried out.

Due to the low case rates within Wolverhampton at present, both in the city and within educational settings, the Schools COVID-19 Helpline will be stepped down from 4pm on May 14. This will allow staff to return to other work. After this period, schools are advised to email schoolscovid@wolverhampton.gov.uk where queries will be picked up by the Health Protection Team and a callback will be provided where necessary. This inbox is monitored between 08:30 and 16:30 Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.
Should a rise in cases be seen locally, the line will reopen to support schools.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Vaccination and health information to support our school families and communities
Please find attached a document containing the latest information around the vaccine and healthy lifestyle choices for our City of Wolverhampton. Please add the relevant links to your school website or through your social media channels. This is an integral part of message sharing as we continue to reduce vaccine hesitancy, as we are fast approaching the vaccination age ranges for your pupil’s parents, grandparents and wider families. Commonwealth Connections: Birmingham 2022
The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham provides a unique opportunity to build some powerful learning by connecting schools around the West Midlands with schools from across the Commonwealth.
After much planning Birmingham Education Partnership and the British Council, with great support from the Youth Sports Trust and Birmingham’s Arts / Cultural sector, are inviting you to get involved. Currently we are looking for 60-80 schools to work with artists, sports people and partner schools through next year.
The Commonwealth Connections Project is twinning schools here with those in official development assistance (ODA) eligible Commonwealth countries. The project will create bespoke educational opportunities for young people and their teachers across the Commonwealth to learn together and develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the Commonwealth and its values, thus allowing young people to feel more ownership and ability to shape their communities.
Closing date for applications: 28 May
