Employability training course changing lives

In this edition of re:new we hear from a City of Wolverhampton resident how a partner-led Pathways into Construction employability training course for unemployed people has changed his life.

Darren Hawkins, 27, of Lanesfield, Ben Kedzierski, 22, of Bilston, and Ileana Petre, aged 47, of Penn Fields, were part of a group that picked up qualifications from the programme. 

Leading construction company, Speller Metcalfe, provided work placements to all the trainees on the council’s essential repairs and maintenance works programme at the Civic Centre, known as the Future Space project. Watch video...

Food and Drink Festival

City to hold first Festival of Food and Drink

City of Wolverhampton is to hold its inaugural Festival of Food and Drink as the showpiece event for its ten-day visitor programme in July.

The weekend festival, being supported by City of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton BID, will be staged on Saturday, July 8 (1pm-8pm) and Sunday 9 (12pm-7pm).

It will take place on Wulfruna Street, the Civic Centre Ceremonial car park, St Peter’s car park and the pedestrian area outside the University of Wolverhampton’s Ambika Paul building. Read more...

Rent with Confidence

Rent with Confidence making its mark in city

City of Wolverhampton Council’s ‘Rent with Confidence’ housing scheme is making its mark in the private sector. 

Almost 650 properties and more than 200 landlords have been star-rated in the first six months of the programme being officially launched.

It is hoped it will improve the health and wellbeing of residents, encourage greater customer choice, and gradually raise the bar for the quality of private sector rented housing in the city. Read more...

Mill St Garage

Summer demolition works for wider Wolverhampton Interchange area

Work will start early this summer to demolish an eyesore building as part of City of Wolverhampton Interchange’s development plans. 

The former Mill Street Garage sits on land next to the old Sack Works off Corn Hill in the city centre – beside the railway line and facing the canal. 

Once the derelict garage is razed it will enable the removal of the dilapidated roof structure on the Sack Works and the stabilising of its walls and gables for its future development. Read more...

City of Wolverhampton is one of the top UK cities to raise a family - that’s according to MoneySuperMarket’s new index.

The Family Living Index was created to guide parents – or soon to be parents – looking to futureproof their next move.

The Index analysed 35 of the UK’s biggest cities against key factors that impact family life, including local school rankings, access to green space, likelihood of burglary, house prices, job opportunities and average salary. Read more...

WIRE Awards

Public get behind inaugural city WIRE Awards - and voting is still open

More than 2,000 public votes have been received for Wolverhampton’s ‘Favourite Retailer of the Year’.

The honour is up for grabs at the city’s first annual Wolverhampton Independent Retail Excellence (WIRE) Awards on Tuesday, July 18.

And there is still time to register your vote via the website or by texting WIRE plus the name of your favourite independent retailer to 60777 (standard network charges may apply). Voting closes at midnight on Wednesday, June 28.

As well as the public vote, 147 businesses have made 359 entries across 11 categories for the WIRE Awards. Read more...
