Dear Parents and Carers,
We know that the current circumstances might well be very difficult for our families for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, some families might find themselves with financial difficulties.
Wrexham Council are once again using the direct payment system to pay £19.50 into the account of a parent or carer per week for each eligible child in the family, which can then be used to buy food. If you were registered for direct payments in the previous lockdown, this will continue automatically.
If your financial circumstances have changed, your children might now be eligible for Free School Meals. Your child is eligible to receive free school meals (in maintained schools in Wales) if you or your child receive the following:
- Income Support (IS)*
- Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA)*
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Income-related Employment Support Allowance (IR)
- Child Tax Credit - providing you’re not entitled to Working Tax Credit with an annual total income below the HMRC set limit
- Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit
The online application form is quick and easy, and can be accessed by clicking on this link. If you are eligible, you will then need to apply for the direct payments through the council.
You have to let the council know immediately if your benefits are stopped or suspended, by calling 01978 298991. If you don’t let them know you’ll be charged for the full cost of any school meals taken by your child, from the date your benefits were stopped or suspended.
If you need any further support with Free School Meals, please call the council on 01978 298991 or email freeschoolmeals@wrexham.gov.uk.
Kind regards,
