EU Settlement Scheme

In 2019 the Home Office brought in a scheme to register people from European countries living in the UK before Brexit. This is called the European Union Settlement Scheme.

The scheme applies to all people from countries in the European Union (as well as people from Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) who were living in the UK before Brexit. It also applies to their families. If these people do not have British nationality or do not have indefinite permission to enter the UK or indefinite permission to stay in the UK, they must apply to the scheme.

People who apply to the scheme must have started living in the UK before the 31st December 2020.

People who apply may be given either ‘Settled Status’ or ‘Pre-settled Status’. This depends on how long they have been living here. People who are given settled status or pre-settled status will be able to:

  • Work in the UK
  • Use the NHS for free
  • Start school or college or carry on going to school or college
  • Apply for social security benefits and pensions
  • Travel in and out of the UK

It is important to apply to the scheme before the 30th June 2021. The scheme is free.

This is a very brief summary of the scheme.   You can find out more and apply to the scheme at the following web-site: www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families. Once you are on the web-site you should scroll down to the section marked ‘Fees’. In this section you will see the words ‘This guide is also available in 26 European languages’. If you click here, you will find all the information you need in the major European languages.
