CLEAR

Innovative Teaching Programme Aims To Boost Student Outcomes

Ysgol Clywedog has launched an innovative education framework designed to accelerate students’ progress and improve attainment by enhancing the quality of teaching.

Teachers at Ysgol Clywedog have embraced the new CLEAR (Challenge, Learning, Engagement, Assessment, Reflection) Teaching and Learning framework which has been adapted from the CLEAR Effective Pedagogy Programme.   The programme, which has been two years in development, was created by Ysgol Clywedog in partnership with three other schools from across the North Wales region; Ysgol Eirias, Hawarden High School and Ysgol Llandrillo Yn Rhos Primary School to develop excellent classroom practitioners in Wales.

The CLEAR framework’s five core principles set out to: provide a high level of challenge and prepare students for independent learning; improve students’ learning experience; actively engage students through a range of learning activities; set measurable learning outcomes with clear success and provide systematic feedback and corrections; review the learning regularly, ask students to explain what they have learnt and re-teach differently when necessary.

To consolidate the new framework and ensure the five core principles are embedded in every single lesson, the school has adopted the motto, “high quality teaching every lesson, every day.”

Training sessions and working parties will build on previous training, so that teachers will participate in high-quality professional development with an opportunity to collaborate to improve standards.

Andrea Francis, Assistant Headteacher – Teaching and Learning at Ysgol Clywedog has been responsible for implementing the new framework at the school.  She said:  “The process of developing the new programme has been very rewarding.  Working in partnership with other schools has allowed us to share ideas, experience, and best practice.

“The teachers here at Ysgol Clywedog are incredibly positive and have embraced the CLEAR model and the training principles of the CLEAR programme.   I am excited to see the impact and benefits of the new framework for both teachers and students here at Ysgol Clywedog as we go forward.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved for their support and, in particular, Hayley Blackwell, Assistant Headteacher at Ysgol Eirias in Colwyn Bay, who has been the driving force behind the development of the programme.  She has worked incredibly hard and has also submitted an application for endorsement of the programme from the National Academy for Educational Leadership Wales (NaEL), which would be fantastic.”

Matt Vickery, headteacher, commented: “One of the biggest impacts on student outcomes is excellent teaching and learning.  This new framework and training programme mark an exciting initiative for the school, by supporting our teachers through quality training and collaborative working.

“Our staff do amazing things every day to support students, their families and the community.  I am delighted that this programme will provide new opportunities for high quality professional development, collaboration and sharing of excellent practice so that our students are inspired to meet their potential.”

Ysgol Clywedog teacher up for Environmental Champion of the Year title

A teacher at the school is celebrating after being shortlisted for an award that recognises exceptional individuals and institutions.

Head of geography Nick Brown has been shortlisted for the Environment Champion of the Year in the Tes Schools Awards 2020.

Mr Brown said: "Outside of school I am active in the eco-community around where I live, doing litter picks and campaigning for a greener world.

"When I started the School Eco-Action Taskforce in September 2019, we had small ambitions, but the enthusiasm of the pupils was contagious.

"We have achieved so much in such a short time, from planting 250 trees and starting an allotment, through to winning an international award and working with schools from Melilla in North Africa and the Lebanon.

"I am driven by the students' desire to change things for the better. They can see the climate changing, species becoming extinct and plastic filling our oceans and want to stop it. My job is to help them achieve this.

"I was so proud to be shortlisted for the TES award, as it is great for the hard work we have all been doing to be officially recognised. I am really looking forward to the awards night, I will be wearing my tux, even though it is online this year!"

Award winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on Friday, November 13, 2020.

Teacher leads lifesaving project making PPE for local care homes.

Joan Brown, a teacher who is currently studying a Level 4 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship has put her new skills into practice, producing 5,000 protective face-visors for staff in local hospitals and care homes.

Joan, 40, was the driving force behind the activity at Ysgol Clywedog which saw colleagues and members of the local community donate their time and resources to produce face visors to combat the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The Welsh Government recently announced a £40m jobs and skills package which will be crucial in incentivising employers to recruit and retain up to 5,000 apprentices, like Joan.

Joan, who moved to Deeside after a family member was taken ill with dementia, said: “As soon as we saw the news unfolding about the lack of PPE, I wanted to do anything I could to help.

“I have a close family member in a care home and so I was very aware of the situation they were facing. I started thinking about the equipment we had in in the design and technology department at school that wasn’t being used and began to research designs for visors.”

After a few prototypes, Joan and the department technician, Nick Clarke began production in her classroom, using the departments laser cutter and workshops for labelling.

Joan, who is studying for her apprenticeship with Portal Training alongside her full-time job as a teacher, said: “I was working full-time, studying and making visors during any spare time I had.

“It was a really busy time and I would often work evenings or weekends to mark work and prepare lessons and resources for online learning”

“We didn’t stop for three months but knowing the possible impact that the virus was having on people’s lives, kept us going.

“We began approaching local schools in the area to look for volunteers to help us with production. After a few weeks what started as a handful of volunteers grew into a team of over 30, producing visors for six hours each day, with local organisations, small businesses, community groups and individuals donating material and machines to help us keep up with demand.

“As part of my apprenticeship, I was learning about successful project management, implementing change and collaboration with other organisations – all the skills I needed to see this project through, it was really quite apt!”

Joan and her team at Ysgol Clywedog produced over 5,000 visors in just 10 weeks. She said: “I knew I was taking on a lot when I started the project, but my apprenticeship helped me become a better leader and also taught me how to manage my workload, so things never got on top of me. I’ve also really benefitted from the one to one mentoring that I’ve had – it’s given me the opportunity to reflect on the skills I’ve developed and those I want to develop further.

“The project has been a very humbling experience and my apprenticeship has given me the motivation to look at additional projects for both school and within the wider community. I’m now planning to move on to my Level 5.”

Matt Vickery, Headteacher at Ysgol Clywedog said: “Joan has been brilliant throughout this whole project. We have supported Joan throughout her apprenticeship, and we couldn’t be more proud of what she’s achieved, even during these unprecedented times. She’s the first member of staff to enroll onto this apprenticeship and she’s been so pleased with the training and the skills she’s developed that she’s inspired three more members of staff to sign up next year.

“I’m looking forward to seeing her enroll onto her Level 5 Apprenticeship and bringing the new skills that she’s developed into her classroom.”

Ken Skates, Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales said: “It’s so encouraging to see apprentices like Joan doing a great job in challenging times. Coronavirus has had a real impact on our economy, and we need to ensure the next generation are skilled, adaptable and work-ready in order to support our economic recovery.

“That is why we recently announced a significant £40m support package which will be absolutely essential in helping employers to take on and train new workers, including apprentices and young people.

“Apprenticeships continue to play a vital role in delivering the skills employers need. Having this pool of talent will help equip individuals and businesses across Wales with the knowledge and skills needed which will help Wales return to the levels of growth we were seeing before the pandemic.”

2nd November Onwards – Information for Students, Parents and Staff

Below you will find a guide to operations at Ysgol Clywedog from 2nd November onwards.  The purpose of the guide is to explain how school will operate for the second half of the autumn term. It may not address every question, but it is designed to provide clarity on how and why school will operate in the way it will from the half term break. I anticipate that we will need to review this as the term progresses and we will continue to reflect changes as Welsh Government assessments are made.

Please email vle@clywedog.org if you have any questions.
