Every week 11 million items of clothing end up in landfill in the UK. Throwaway fashion is putting increasing pressure on our planet and its people - it’s unsustainable. Now there's something you can do to help. Join Second Hand September and pledge to say no to new clothes for 30 days.

When you sign up Oxfam will give you all the shopping tips, styling tricks and inspiration you need to make your month of no new a breeze. Saying yes to second hand stops great clothes from going to landfill – giving them a longer life.

Waste clothing is a growing problem in the UK, fuelled by the rise of ‘fast fashion’ - clothing that is often cheaply made and expected to last only one season.  A study commissioned by Vanish, the stain removal brand, found on average a new piece of clothing was considered old after only 20 washes or after 50 days. Buying good quality clothing, whether second hand or new, is the best way to ensure that it lasts and doesn’t end up as part of the 300,000 items thrown away each year in the UK.
