Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest

As some restrictions were lifted this week, I have really loved seeing residents across Waltham Forest back out enjoying our vibrant high streets, but want to urge you all to take this next step safely. As you will all have seen there is a concern nationally around the Indian variant and I thought it would be useful to hear from our Director of Public Health about what we needed to know.

Joe McDonnell, Director of Public Health:  “While there has been an increase of the proportion of cases of the variant of concern first detected in India in recent weeks, total numbers of the variant remain low in London. In Waltham Forest, the number of cases is very low and overall covid numbers remain low. I want to assure you that we are monitoring the situation daily and are ready to respond if this variant, and any variant, should reach our communities.

Please be aware that there is some evidence that this variant could be more transmissible – the best thing you can do to avoid catching and spreading the virus is to stick to the national guidance, self-isolating if you have symptoms, and getting tested as soon as possible. Finally, the available vaccines can provide protection from this variant, so make sure you take yours up as soon as it’s your turn. Being vaccinated is the biggest thing you can do to protect not just yourself, but your loved ones as well.”

If you are eligible for your first or second vaccination, it's important you get this booked in. You can do this via the NHS website, can book your slot at Walthamstow library directly by calling 020 3196 3239 or book online for our next pop up in Leyton for this Saturday.

Every vaccination not only protects us but everyone in the community – I will ensure we keep you up to date on the local situation to this global pandemic.

Over 36? Book you and your household in for their Covid-19 vaccine!

Vaccine

If you're 36+ or 18+ and clinically vulnerable, or work in a health or care role (including unpaid carers) you can now book your Covid-19 vaccine.

And if you're eligible in one of the current priority groups, you can now bring anyone who lives with you and is 18+ with you to get their vaccine too at Walthamstow Library. You need to book them at the same time as you do, and they'll need to bring evidence of their address with them.

This is a great opportunity to get your family the protection they need against Covid-19. Book your slot at Walthamstow Library by calling 020 3196 3239.

If you live nearer Leyton and would prefer to book in somewhere more local to you, then book onto our Saturday pop up.

Thanks for Choosing Local

choose local

We’d like to thank you for continuing to Choose Local in Waltham Forest.

By coming together as a community over the pandemic, you helped many local businesses through a really difficult time. Now restrictions are easing, it’s more important than ever that we support locally and support safely, wearing masks and following distancing guidance when required.

We’re spotlighting one local business each week to show you the range of expertise and entrepreneurial spirit on your doorstep. This week, we spoke to Kala, a Leyton-based maker who turns African prints into vibrant clothes and accessories.

It's Walk to School Week!

walk to school

This year’s National Walk to School Week is taking place 17-21 May.

Less than half of primary school children currently walk to school, yet we know that it makes them feel happier and healthier and helps to reduce congestion and pollution outside the school gates.

We’ve been asking parents and schools to challenge their pupils and children to walk at least a mile each day (only 20 minutes) to collect walking stickers. Every time they complete a walk they can add a sticker to the free walking card we’ve supplied them with.

So far we’ve had a record breaking 25,543, 4-11 year olds take part across Waltham Forest with 54 schools sign up!

For more information on Walk to School Week or TfL STARS Travel plan programme please contact the team.

Whipps Cross Planning Application submitted

whipps cross

Barts Health NHS Trust has submitted planning applications to Waltham Forest Council for a brand new hospital at Whipps Cross.

The proposals aim to transform the wider Whipps Cross site and position the new hospital at the heart of a new neighbourhood with much needed new homes alongside other health and wellbeing services, leisure and cultural facilities and new green public spaces, bringing real benefits and investment to the local community.

The Local Planning Authority will now undertake a statutory consultation on the proposals. You can view the planning applications on the Waltham Forest Council website with reference number 211244 and 211245.

  • Take a test twice a week, every 3 or 4 days
  • Report each result on the government website or by calling 119
  • If you test positive, get a follow-up PCR test within 48 hours to confirm

Restrictions have eased - let's stay safe

test and trace

From Monday 17 May, restrictions have eased meaning life is getting that little bit further back to normal.

With indoor hospitality and entertainment reopening, and us being able to meet indoors with friends or family in groups of six or as two households - we need everyone across Waltham Forest to keep safe. Remember to:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Wear your face covering when needed
  • Keep apart from anyone you don't live with

By following these rules, we'll make sure we continue out of this pandemic.

More businesses eligible for grants

small business

The next round of Additional Restrictions Grants has now been launched for local businesses. We are aiming to distribute up to £6.5million by the end of June through two grant schemes, a Hardship Fund, and a Growth Fund. Both schemes are now open for applications.

We intend to support as many businesses as possible and are very keen to help businesses who may not have been eligible for other forms of financial support, as well as those who are keen to invest and grow post-pandemic.

Full details on eligibility criteria and how to apply are available on the link below.

Call to Holy Ground

exhibition

St Andrews Church and Shri Nathji Sanatan Hindu Temple, Leytonstone, are co-hosting an intriguing artistic exploration of nature and belief called Call to Holy Ground.

The project includes installations in the church and temple, a sound walk through the fringes of Epping Forest, and an online video that together creates an experiential ‘scripture’ of the earth.

Created by contemporary artists FourthLand (Isik Sayarer and Eva Knutsdotter), the Call to Holy Ground exhibition will be available for all to enjoy until Saturday 17 July.
