New rules on electrical safety go live

electricty checks man in mask

New national rules on electrical safety came into force on Monday 1 June 2020.

The regulations apply to any new tenancies from Wednesday 1 July 2020 and existing tenancies from Thursday 1 April 2021.

The new regulations require landlords to have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a person who is qualified and competent, at least every five years.

Landlords have to provide a copy of the electrical safety report to their tenants, and to their local authority if requested.

The Council can also serve a remedial notice to require the landlord to take remedial action, should a landlord not comply, the Council can take the necessary remedial action at a cost to the landlord.

Penalties of up to £30,000 can be imposed  by the Council on landlords failing to follow the new rules.
