National Reading and Numeracy Tests 2018

Test window dates for 2018 

  • Primary schools: 2–9 May 
  • Secondary schools: 25 April – 9 May  

Primary Schools will receive their test materials week commencing 23 April

Schools are reminded that a balanced curriculum should be maintained in the run-up to the tests and that time spent familiarising learners with test techniques should be kept to a minimum.

Online Personalised Assessments – Take part in the trials

We are looking for schools to take part in the upcoming adaptive trials for the new procedural numeracy online personalised assessments, which will be introduced in schools next academic year. If your school would like to volunteer please email trials@nationaltests.cymru

Numerical Reasoning: Supported Marking Service 2018

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP): enabling trainee teachers gain Qualified Teacher Status whilst working within a school

The GTP Policy and Priorities Statement for academic year 2018/19 is now available. Application forms for GTP 2018/19 can be accessed via the Discover Teaching website. Queries regarding making an application for a place on the GTP should be directed to the relevant regional Initial Teacher Education Centre.

Hwb+ is being withdrawn from the Hwb toolset 

If you are actively using the Hwb+ learning platform for activities other than user management (usernames and passwords), you will need to migrate your data to other Hwb tools by Friday 25 May 2018. Contact hwb@gov.wales if you need support migrating your data. 

Use J2bloggy for your school’s public-facing website

Through Hwb, all maintained schools in Wales are able to use the Just2easy Toolsuite. This includes J2bloggy, a fully functioning WordPress website creation platform.

The NHS is celebrating its 70th birthday on 5 July 2018

There are many activities happening to mark this special occasion including an NHS70 Children’s Drawing competition for primary age children across Wales.

Cymeriadau Difyr

A set of 21 story books for children between 3-5 years old. Each book focuses on helping children to recognise numerals by using fun and exciting methods. This resource is available as a pack or as individual books.

Dawns a Chreu

A resource offering children 3-7 years old opportunities to respond physically to a range of stimuli through music, stories or poetry, in order to foster and develop their physical skills, literacy, promote their creativity and enhance their self-confidence. 

Caneuon Cŵl

A music book containing 30 original songs in different styles for 3 to 5 year olds. The songs have been specifically composed so that they can be used in various areas (both indoors and outdoors) of the Foundation Phase classrooms. There are two books available on gwales.

Take a fresh look at this important issue by examining it from global as well as local perspectives with this new bilingual resource from Global Learning Programme – Wales and Oxfam linked to the Send my Friend to School campaign 2018.

Children's Worlds: An international survey of children's well-being

If your school is one of the 100 primary schools and 50 secondary schools from across Wales that has been selected and invited to participate in the study, your participation is critical.

The purpose of the study is to collect internationally comparative evidence on children's well-being. It asks children about their lives, daily activities and time use.
