National Reading and Numeracy Tests 2018

Test window dates for 2018 

  • Primary schools: 2–9 May 
  • Secondary schools: 25 April – 9 May  

National Reading and Numeracy Tests 2018 

Secondary Schools  should receive their test materials this week. If they haven't been received by Thursday or if the order is incomplete, schools are asked to contact the Test Order Helpline on 02920 265327. 

Schools are reminded that a balanced curriculum should be maintained in the run-up to the tests and that time spent familiarising learners with test techniques should be kept to a minimum. 

Online Personalised Assessments – Take part in the trials

We are looking for schools to take part in the upcoming adaptive trials for the new procedural numeracy online personalised assessments, which will be introduced in schools next academic year. If your school would like to volunteer please email trials@nationaltests.cymru

Numerical Reasoning: Supported Marking Service 2018

Once again in 2018 there will be a Supported Marking Service for the Year 7 to 9 Numerical Reasoning Tests.

Asbestos Management in Schools Guidance – We are seeking your views 

We are refreshing our Asbestos Management in Schools guidance to support duty holders with their responsibilities in this field.  We encourage all people who have responsibility for asbestos management in schools and colleges to review the proposed revised guidance, and feedback on its usefulness, relevance and also make any suggestions for improvement at 21stcenturyschools@gov.wales. 

Changes to the Credit & Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW)  

To increase flexibility for the provision of lifelong learning, the CQFW now recognises Further Education Institutions in Wales (alongside UK Awarding Bodies and Higher Education Institutions in Wales) as eligible to develop accredited units of learning.

National Academy for Educational Leadership – Endorsement Process Information Day

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP): enabling trainee teachers gain Qualified Teacher Status whilst working within a school 

The GTP Policy and Priorities Statement for academic year 2018/19 is now available. Application forms for GTP 2018/19 can be accessed via the Discover Teaching websiteQueries regarding making an application for a place on the GTP should be directed to the relevant regional Initial Teacher Education Centre.

Nominate a student for London Week 2018 competition 

Headteachers are invited to nominate one pupil from either Year 10 or 11 to compete for a place on a unique work experience week in London this July.  Eight successful students will take part in a range of experiences in the city. Closing date for entries is Tuesday 8 May.

Student finance deadline approaching

The deadline to ensure full-time undergraduates get all their finance in time for the start of their course is 11 May 2018. If their student finance application is late, their money might be too.

Hwb+ is being withdrawn from the Hwb toolset 

If you are actively using the Hwb+ learning platform for activities other than user management (usernames and passwords), you will need to migrate your data to other Hwb tools by Friday 25 May 2018. Contact hwb@gov.wales if you need support migrating your data. 

Use J2bloggy for your school’s public-facing website

Through Hwb, all maintained schools in Wales are able to use the Just2easy Toolsuite. This includes J2bloggy, a fully functioning WordPress website creation platform.
