Developing the new Curriculum in Wales – our infographic sets out the steps #curriculumreform



In November the Cabinet Secretary for Education will be hosting two conferences:

  • 16 November, SSE SWALEC, Cardiff  
  • 23 November, Venue Cymru, Llandudno

Headteachers and key education stakeholders are invited.  It will be a further opportunity for Headteachers to engage with Welsh Government on our National Education Reform journey.  Please put the date in your diary, further information will follow in September.

national reading and numeracy tests

Personalised numeracy assessments – sign up for trials!

In September and October 2017, we are running the first trial for the new onscreen test questions for procedural numeracy and we are inviting schools to participate.

National Test Results 

The National Reading and Numeracy Test results for 2017 are now available for primary and secondary schools to download along with a guidance for practitioners which may be helpful to use when discussing test outcomes with parents/carers. Documents also being made available at the end of this week are the “Calculating the Learners’ Scores” tables, Pupil Results Sheet template and age-calculator.

Interpreting National Reading and Numeracy test results – animated guide for parents/carers

We have produced a short animation to talk parents/carers through the National Reading and Numeracy Test reports. A link to the animation is included on the pupil results sheet, but you may wish to share the link on your school’s website

National Tests 2018 

The dates for the 2018 National Tests have been set as follows:

  • Secondary Schools: 25 April – 9 May 2018 
  • Primary Schools: 2 – 9 May 2018
  • Middle Schools: 25 April – 9 May 2018

Promoting Equality and Tackling Racism in your School - New Factsheets now available on Learning Wales

Welsh Government and Show Racism the Red Card have produced 4 brief guides to appropriate terminology, equality duties, and identifying and reporting a racist 

Voices Over Silence: A Youth Call to Action on FGM 

Earlier this month the Cabinet Secretary wrote to all schools to raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and to remind schools to be vigilant of signs of FGM. The Voices Over Silence campaign fights for cultural change in Wales, by capturing young people’s voices and views on FGM, to support intergenerational conversations within a range of different communities and contexts. Please print, display and share these posters and video within your school community, websites and noticeboards.

The new professional standards for teaching and leadership are now available.

Drive to improve maths in schools launched

A new network for excellence to improve how maths is taught in schools and improve standards has been officially launched.  NNEM Hwb Zone.

Third of students eligible for maximum grant under new support system

Students from Wales will receive the equivalent of the National Living Wage while they study, Education Secretary Kirsty Williams has recently been confirme.

Welsh Physics Teacher Conference - 4 October, Brecon

A wonderful opportunity for teachers and technicians to take part in a wide variety of physics CPD activities. This free day of workshops is open to all teachers, technicians, newly qualified and trainee teachers. 

Welsh Ambulance Services Primary School Campaign ‘Shoctober’ relaunches

Following last year’s success, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust will be visiting primary schools across Wales during October to promote ‘Shoctober’. A campaign which aims to teach junior school children life saving skills. Pupils will learn about CPR, recovery position, defibrillators and how to deal with someone choking. Spaces are limited.

Connect with a partner school overseas

Why not start the new school year with refreshed teaching approaches and book a FREE Autumn Connecting Classrooms professional learning course? Explore the British Council’s online spaces to set up a partnership with a teacher participating in the programme overseas. You can take your collaboration further by working on a project or applying for a £3,000 grant to work together face-to-face
