Welsh footballers help pupils go global

Players from the Wales National Football team have been doing their bit to help pupils concentrate on their modern foreign languages (MFL) lessons by launching a new learning resource pack linked to this year’s Euros.  New MFL resources can be found on HWB

National Reading and Numeracy Tests - Information for parents and carers

Information for parents on the 2016 tests will be available online after the Easter break for schools to download, embed and share from their websites. Recent research shows that many parents are not aware of the parents’ guide and sharing this information with parents strengthens understanding and reduces concern.  Paper copies of the parents’ guide will also be arriving in primary schools after the Easter break for issuing to parents of Year 2 learners.

There have been changes to the way in which financial support for the administration of the National Reading and Numeracy Tests is provided.  Find out what support is available to schools for the 2016 National Reading and Numeracy Tests.

Written Statement – Minister for Education and Skills

The Minister has provided an update following consultation on the draft Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Bill.  A summary of responses will be published following the Assembly Elections.  The responses are already being used to inform work to refine the Bill and further develop the ALN Code, implementation plan and wider comprehensive package of reforms.

Lead and Emerging Practitioner School Project - Tranche 2 impact evaluation report

National Foundation for Educational Research (NfER) have produced an impact evaluation on Tranche 2 of the Lead and Emerging Practitioner School Project.   The evaluation found that the Pathfinder model of organising and facilitating national school-to-school improvement had been effective in supporting and accelerating improvement in both the Lead and Emerging schools.  Case studies on 7 partnerships will follow soon.

CSSIW  - Our annual report 2014-15 has been published

The report explains how the Inspectorate is embedding human rights and well-being outcomes in its updated inspection methods, and continues to collaborate with citizens, service providers, and commissioners to develop clearer standards and regulations for social care in Wales.

New Infographic – Food and physical activity

Chief Medical Officer for Wales Dr Ruth Hussey has launched a new infographic which summarises the existing guidelines from the four UK Chief Medical Officers’ to encourage children and young people to become more physically active.

The infographic promotes the benefits of physical activity to support the physical activity guidelines in schools.

Living Streets’ Walk to School Week

Join thousands of children, parents and teachers in Walk to School Week (16–20 May) encouraging more children to walk to school.  Living Streets mascot, Strider, will be travelling around schools in Wales to celebrate the week. Walk to School Week 2016 is all about promoting the mental health benefits of walking to school, from better concentration to being more alert.  To get involved or to invite Strider to your Walk to School event please contact wales@livingstreets.org.uk

Science takes you places

As part of the ‘Focus on science’ campaign and parental engagement, this video encourages children to do well in science as it demonstrates a wide range of careers in the future.  Share this video on your schools websites for parents to encourage their children to do well in science.

How about encouraging parents to do some fun science activities at home with the children over Easter?  Bubbles, coin, DIY rocket and balloon kebabs.
