► Some Q&As

Voting by post

If you cannot get to your local polling station on the day of an election you can vote by post.

Anyone whose name appears on the register of electors can apply to vote by post. No special qualifications or requirements are necessary. If you want to vote by post at any or all elections you can apply to do so.

The deadline to receive applications to vote by post in the General Election is Tuesday 26 November, 5pm.

Apply for a postal vote

If you are a postal voter you will receive a postal poll card.

Postal ballot packs to existing postal voters will be posted around 22 November. These need to be completed and returned by polling day.

Anyone who applied for a postal vote after 13 November should receive their postal ballot pack around 29 November.

Voting by proxy

You can request a proxy vote if you want someone else to vote on your behalf because you can't get to your polling station on polling day.

Proxy voting is where you appoint someone to go to the polling station and vote on your behalf. Your proxy is then intended to vote in the way you direct.

Your appointed proxy will be sent a proxy poll card after 4 December which tells them they have been appointed as a proxy and where the elector's polling station is.

Unlike postal voting, proxy voting other than for one election is restricted to certain categories of people.

The deadline to receive applications to vote by proxy in the General Election is Wednesday 4 December, 5pm.
