On your bike!

Learning to ride a bike

Bikeability is the national programme for cycle training in England and Wales. It is based on the National Standard for cycle training. Last term, the Bikeability team trained around 200 Telford & Wrekin school children in how to use their cycle safely.

Children love to ride their bikes, so why not consider a family cycle ride to get some fresh air, get fit and have some fun!

Why not download our FREE Walking and Cycling map and plan your next cycle ride.

Due to current lockdown restrictions, Bikeability sessions are not currently available. But cycle riding can still form part of your daily exercise routine. Find out more about Bikeability in Telford and Wrekin on their website

Health, wellbeing and volunteering!

Health Champions

If your own Health and Wellbeing is important to you and you feel you could encourage others to make a difference to their own health then becoming a Health Champion (for those 19 and over) or a Youth Health Champion (for young people 13-18) could be the volunteering opportunity for you!

Training and support is provided throughout, although at this time we are unable to offer face to face training everything you might need to carry out the role is available online.

We would really like our Health Champion volunteers to continue to have health related conversations and signpost to services. Especially at this time when people’s health and wellbeing is suffering.

To find out more on becoming a Health Champion or Youth Health Champion follow the links below.

Workplace Wellbeing

Workplace well being

Every employer depends on having healthy and productive employees – valued and supported staff are far more likely to deliver the best outcomes for business. For many organisations COVID-19 is creating significant uncertainty, having an impact on their business and their employees. National Mind research concluded that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.

According to Mind, 56% of employers said they would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing but don’t feel they have the right training or guidance.

Gemma Coulman-Smith, Telford Mind

With a national emphasis on mental health, employers have never had a better opportunity to start a conversation with their employees about their wellbeing. A supportive workplace wellbeing culture can make the difference in terms of thriving and surviving. Businesses have a legal responsibility for employee health, as well as safety.

Telford Mind, the Mental Health Productivity Pilot, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Capgemini in conjunction with Telford & Wrekin Council are working collaboratively to support local businesses with a range of training, activity and planning, creating a roadmap to success.

This project will provide Telford and Wrekin residents with a small range of FREE on-demand fitness class workouts. These workouts will be low impact and most suited to those that are looking to start getting active, older people and those who have underlying health conditions.

The sessions are delivered by Telford and Wrekin Council Leisure Services qualified fitness instructors and feature a small range of the following low impact/ beginner classes….

  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Combat
  • Low impact aerobics
  • Seated exercise sessions
  • Legs Bums and Tums

Working in partnership with Let’s Get Telford Active and Ricoh Products Limited, this programme aims to provide residents with a form of physical activity that they can do from the comfort of their own home. Due to COVID some people may not wish to participate in physical activity in a group setting at this moment in time, so to help we are looking to provide a small range of @home workouts so you can become or continue to remain active.
