What have we been up to?

Welcome to the Summer Term edition of our e-newsletter.  

While our team are still working remotely, we are continuing to offer career information, advice, guidance and employability support to the young people and students in our community.  

This time of the year many well-known, and small to medium sized businesses are starting their apprenticeship application process for young people finishing school or college this summer. Our professional team of Career Advisers and Brokerage and Tracking Officers are here to help those that may be interested in this route.

Latest unemployment data for young people

April’s ONS job stats revealed the number of young people unemployed for more than six months has doubled from a year ago. This is the highest rate recorded in five years. Young people also account for over half of the fall in employees since last March. Click on the hyperlink above for further details.

Roadmap for lifting lockdown leads to a substantial increase in hiring activity

The UK government’s plan to ease lockdown measures, return to more normal business operations in the months ahead and the vaccine progress has led to improvement in recruitment. The latest KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs survey pointed to the sharpest rise in permanent placements for nearly six years.

Secondary school students admit to future career fear

The Careers after Covid report recently published by Launch Your Career has revealed three-quarters of students (78%) admitted they are worried about making the right choice of career.

It is an organisation in the education sector and tackles the misconceptions about apprenticeships and promotes the benefits. It includes the latest news and blogs relating to apprenticeships. It also offers a variety of vacancies from well-known businesses.

Rich Mix New Creatives 

After a successful start for Rich Mix New Creatives in May, they are now taking referrals for July. There will be the opportunity to meet and hear from experienced industry professionals in the world of arts and culture, including music, dance, theatre, and film. It is open for young people aged 16-21. There is also 'Take Over Tuesdays' which will be open to under 30s.  If you have any questions then please contact Chia or Alex

Bringing STEM to life through real-world engineering

Neon Futures brings together the UK's best engineering experiences and inspiring careers resources to help teachers bring STEM to life with real-world examples of engineering. The website has engaging activities for students and these are linked to up-to-date careers information and highlight real-world applications of engineering.

Online university summer school

The University of East London has announced its 'Your Future Summer School Challenge 2021'. It is open to students aged 16-19 in year 12 or the first year of Further Education. 

Leading Inclusive Futures through Technology

LIFT is a three year programme across Tower Hamlets, Camden, Hackney and Islington that aims to help residents into good local jobs in tech, digital, sciences, and creative production, and to support businesses and start-ups in these sectors.

Activities

Young people can also continue to engage in a range of careers, personal development and fun activities including:

  • Tower Hamlets Youth Service provides a range of fun and personal development activities for young people who live, work or study in the borough.
  • National Citizenship Service exists to engage, unite and empower young people with life skills.
  • Not going to Uni NGTU is a website for school and college leavers. Search for thousands of jobs, opportunities and apprenticeships in the UK.
  • Uptree a network connecting young people and employers.
  • Global Bridge is for students in years 7 to 13. Once students have registered they are on their way to creating a multimedia digital profile that reflects their personality and competencies both academic and non-academic.
  • Future Learn and Open Learn offer various online courses with universities and industry experts worldwide (mostly free).
  • Microsoft ongoing virtual workshops or training.
  • UniTasterDays various university events for students and school staff.
  • Qdos is a careers app targeted at young people 14-18 years old. Includes Labour Market Information features, 'Career Finder' and Trending Jobs'.
  • Fledglink is aimed at young people from 16-24. On the homepage, users are greeted with a quiz encouraging them to find out if university or an apprenticeship is best for them.
  • The Skillsbuilder Partnership shows how to build essential skills at every stage of life. Start using it today, for free.

Coronavirus update

The Young WorkPath office in Watney Market remains closed to the public until further notice.

Our team is continuing to provide careers interviews over the phone and by video.

Careers Advisers and Brokerage and Tracking Officers are continuing to support school/college leavers and NEET young people who are unsure of their next steps and need help to find a place in education, employment or training.

Local advice

The council is continuing to work with partner organisations across the borough to tackle Covid-19 and to make sure that our residents, particularly those most vulnerable, are supported.
