Celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day

As we can no longer gather to celebrate the VE Day 75th commemoration events due to Covid-19, we want to know how you will be celebrating the 75th VE Day anniversary at home.

Please share your memories and any old photos with us via social media using #VEDayTorfaen or share them by commenting on the Facebook post we will send out at 11:15am on the day.

On the day:

  • The official commemorations will begin at 11am when a national moment of remembrance will be marked with a two minute silence.
  • At 11:15am the Royal Legion is hosting a VE Day 75 livestream, available at rbl.org.uk/veday75, sharing stories and memories from those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War, and recognising the difficulties people are experiencing today.
  • At 3pm, Sir Winston Churchill’s 1945 speech to the nation will be broadcast on the BBC as part of special programmes planned for the day.
  • At 9pm, HM The Queen will broadcast a message to the nation on the BBC-the exact moment her father, King George VI, gave a radio address in 1945.
  • This will be followed by an opportunity for people across the UK to come together on their doorsteps and sing ‘We’ll Meet Again’ for a national moment of celebration.

You are expected to mark the occasion in line with current social distancing guidelines and from the safety of your own homes. There is information and guidance on how the occasion can be marked safely at home at - https://ve-vjday75.gov.uk/

A VE Day Learning Pack is also available on The Royal British Legion website page alongside a VE Day 75 activity pack produced by the National Memorial Arboretum - https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/…/rem…/teaching-remembrance
