Today, the first set of pupils from Torfaen’s newly established Welsh Language Immersion Unit – Carreg Lam, have graduated.
Nine pupils completed the 12-week education programme, learning the Welsh Language in a structured and innovative way.
They will now join their main-stream classes and will continue to be supported by the centre in their schools before the next round of pupils arrive in September.
Carreg Lam, which means ‘stepping stone’, opened in April and is a late immersion provision unit set up to help learners aged 7 to 11, entering Welsh-medium education at a later stage.
It also caters for pupils for whom Welsh may not have been part of their daily routine, to gain the skills and confidence needed to continue their learning through Welsh.
Head Teacher at Carreg Lam, Matthew Dicken-Williamson, said: “Today, we have joined together to celebrate the success of nine wonderful children. We also met to celebrate the richness and resilience of the Welsh language and to emphasise the importance of bilingualism in our society.
“The Welsh language holds a special place in our hearts, as it is not just a means of communication but a symbol of our cultural heritage and identity.”
Councillor Richard Clark, Torfaen Councils Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, awarded the children with certificates and plaques, acknowledging their exceptional commitment and accomplishments.
Councillor Clark said: "I want to extend my congratulations to these exceptional children for their dedication, commitment, and outstanding achievements.
“They have paved the way for future generations, setting a high standard of excellence and serving as an inspiration to their peers."

Heddiw, mae’r disgyblion cyntaf o Uned Drochi Iaith Gymraeg newydd Torfaen – Carreg Lam, wedi graddio.
Cwblhaodd naw o ddisgyblion y rhaglen addysg 12 wythnos o hyd, gan ddysgu’r iaith Gymraeg mewn ffordd strwythuredig ac arloesol.
Byddan nhw nawr yn ymuno â dosbarthiadau yn y brif ffrwd a byddan nhw’n parhau i gael cefnogaeth gan y ganolfan yn eu hysgolion cyn i’r disgyblion nesaf gyrraedd fis Medi.
Agorodd Carreg Lam, yn Ebrill, ac mae’n uned drochi hwyr i helpu dysgwyr 7 i 11 oed sy’n dod i addysg gyfrwng Cymraeg yn hwyrach.
Mae ar gael hefyd i ddisgyblion nad yw’r Gymraeg efallai wedi bod yn rhan o’u trefn ddyddiol, i gael y sgiliau a’r hyder y mae eu hangen i barhau i ddysgu yn Gymraeg.
Dywedodd Pennaeth Carreg Lam, Matthew Dicken-Williamson: “Heddiw, rydym ni wedi ymuno gyda’n gilydd i ddathlu llwyddiant naw o blant anhygoel. Rydym hefyd yn cyfarfod i ddathlu cyfoeth a chydnerthedd yr iaith Gymraeg a phwysleisio pwysigrwydd dwyieithrwydd yn ein cymdeithas.
“Mae gan yr iaith Gymraeg le arbennig yn ein calonnau, oherwydd nid yw’n ffordd o gyfathrebu’n unig ond mae’n symbol o’n treftadaeth ddiwylliannol a’n hunaniaeth.”
Rhoddodd y Cynghorydd Richard Clark, Aelod Gweithredol Cyngor Torfaen dros Blant, Teuluoedd ac Addysg dystysgrifau a phlaciau, i gydnabod eu hymrwymiad eithriadol a’u llwyddiannau.
Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Clark: "Rydw i am longyfarch y plant eithriadol yma am eu hymroddiad, eu hymrwymiad a’u llwyddiannau.
“Maen nhw wedi braenaru tir i genedlaethau’r dyfodol, gan osod safon uchel o ragoriaeth a dangos eu hun fel esiampl i eraill."
