Welsh Government Winter Fuel Support Scheme

A one-off £200 payment to help eligible households with fuel costs this winter is open for applications.

 

If you believe you are eligible but have not received a letter or email, you can apply online.The deadline for applications is 5pm on Tuesday 28 February 2023.

 

Warmer Wales

Warmer Wales is a free comprehensive and impartial service that can help you reduce your energy bills through supplier switching, insulation grants and more informed use.

Nest Scheme

The Welsh Government Nest scheme offers a range of free, impartial advice and, if you are eligible, a package of free home energy efficiency improvements such as a new boiler, central heating or insulation.

Eco-flex grant

A grant scheme allowing energy efficiency improvements for residents in fuel poverty or who are vulnerable. Click here for more information

 

Local Energy Advice Partnership

LEAP is a free service that is helping people keep warm and reduce their energy bills without costing them any money.

 

LEAP has some very broad eligibility requirements and is open to all types of householders – homeowners, private renters and social housing tenants.

Priority Services Register

The Priority Services Register is a free support service provided by Energy suppliers and network operators to help people in vulnerable situations.

Cold Weather Payment

You may get a Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.

 

If the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below, over 7 consecutive days, you’ll get £25 for each 7 day period. It's paid between 1 November and 31 March. Find out more information here

 

Home energy support

Citizen's Energy Advice drop-in session at Thornhill Community Centre Hub every Wednesday between 1.30pm and 4pm.

 

Energy advisers are on hand to support people with any queries they may have about their home energy bills and and ways they can reduce energy usage at home.

 

Discretionary Assistance Fund

Welsh Government grants for essential costs such as gas and electricity, as well as food, clothing or emergency travel.

Torfaen Citizens Advice Bureau 

The Torfaen Citizens Advice Service is available to all adults seeking help with benefits, debt, housing, employment and any other issue you may have.

 

CAB operates a drop-in session to offer general advice at Cwmbran Library every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Council Tax Reduction

If you are on a low income or receive Universal Credit or Income Support, you may be entitled to a reduction in your council tax.

Help2Claim is run by Torfaen Citizens Advice Bureau and supports residents to make their Universal Credit claims online. To book an appointment please call 01633 876121.

Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) 

If you are struggling to pay your rent, you may be eligible to a Discretionary Housing Payment. DHP's are normally only awarded for a short period, for example 3 months.

Torfaen Housing Support Grant

The Housing Support Grant team provide a range of free support services to individuals living in Torfaen who have a housing related support need. They help to prevent homelessness, stabilise a person’s housing situation and encourage them to live independently.

Welsh Water - HelpU scheme

Welsh Water have a range of schemes and tariffs designed to support customers with financial challenges.

Credit unions are community organisations owned and managed by the members who
use them and are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Food banks

If your struggling to put food on the table you could be entitled to receive food vouchers.

Building Resilient Communities, Citizens Advice, JobCentre Plus, GP surgeries, health visitors and social workers all hand out vouchers which can be used at a local food bank.

Warm Spaces

There are a number of venues opening their doors this Winter to provide a warm, welcoming space for residents, with some offering a hot meal and drink.

Salvation Army Warm Welcome

The Salvation Army in Cwmbran are hosting a Winter Warm Welcome Walk-in every Monday, from 12 – 2pm, until the end of March 2023.

 

Come and sit in a warm space, form friendships and enjoy a free lunch consisting of soup, sandwich, jacket potato, healthy sweet and fruit, tea and coffee. The service will be closed on Monday 26 December.

 

Tasty not Wasty

A new pay-as-you-feel café in Cwmbran is helping to ensure surplus supermarket food doesn’t go to waste.

 

The Tasty Not Wasty café, based at Llanyrafon Methodist Church, in Cwmbran, is open Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 1pm. Follow them on Facebook @TastyNotWastyCIC

 

SustainABLE - Able Radio

Able Radio’s SustainABLE food shop sells low-cost fruit and veg which has been grown locally by their service users.

 

The shop is based at Nant Bran on Upper Cwmbran Road and is open every weekday from 10am to midday and from 1pm to 2.30pm. Visit www.facebook.com/AbleRadio

 

Victory Grocery Store

Victory Church Grocery Store is a new low cost food store that has been setup to support people through the cost of living crisis.

 

It's an affordable support service for residents in Cwmbran whereby you pay £4 for £20 worth of goods,  including fresh fruit and veg. Customers pay a £5 yearly subsription fee, and are limited to two shops per week.

CoStar Foodshare Hwb

The CoStar Hwb is a new foodshare project based in Fairwater shops. It's open five days a week, from 10am until 2pm, and provides emergency food parcels to people in crisis.

 

Costar also run a food co-op on a Thursday and Friday, whereby residents can pay £4 a week to receive selection of tinned and packet foods, fruit and vegetables and other essential items.

No one wants to waste food, especially now, so make your food go further by taking a look at some of the hints and tips on the Love Food Hate Waste website.

 

The website can help you plan meals, work out the perfect portion size, and can even help you create meals with any leftovers you may have.

Not In Miss Out

Universal Primary Free School Meals

All children in infants school are now able to take up the Welsh Government's Universal Primary Free School Meals offer. The scheme will be rolled out to junior year groups next year.

 

Children in secondary schools and currently in receipt of or eligible to apply for a free school meal will be unaffected by the implementation of the universal scheme.

The Childcare Offer for Wales’ new national digital service has launched, making it easier than ever to access support towards your childcare costs.

Hwb Rhannu Bwyd CoStar

Mae Hwb Rhannu Bwyd CoStar yn brosiect newydd i rannu bwyd. Mae wedi ei leoli yn siopau Fairwater. Mae ar agor pum niwrnod yr wythnos, o 10am tan 2pm, ac mae’n darparu parseli bwyd brys i bobl sy’n wynebu argyfwng.

 

Mae CoStar hefyd yn cynnal menter fwyd gydweithredol ar ddydd Iau a dydd Gwener, ble y gall bobl dalu £4 yr wythnos i dderbyn dewis o fwydydd tun a phecynnau bwyd, ffrwythau a llysiau ac eitemau hanfodol.

Nid oes unrhyw un eisiau gwastraffu bwyd, yn enwedig nawr, felly gwnewch i'ch bwyd fynd ymhellach trwy edrych ar rai o'r awgrymiadau a'r awgrymiadau ar wefan Hoffi Bwyd Casáu Gwastraff.

 

Gall y wefan eich helpu i gynllunio prydau bwyd, gweithio allan y maint dogn perffaith, a gall hyd yn oed eich helpu i greu prydau gydag unrhyw fwyd dros ben sydd gennych.

Mae pob plentyn mewn Ysgol Fabanod bellach yn gallu manteisio ar gynllun Llywodraeth Cymru i gynnig Prydau Ysgol am ddim i holl blant Ysgolion Cynradd. Bydd y cynllun yn cael ei gyflwyno i grwpiau blwyddyn iau y flwyddyn nesaf.

 

Ni fydd gweithredu’r cynllun cyffredinol yn effeithio ar blant mewn ysgolion uwchradd sydd ar hyn o bryd yn derbyn neu'n gymwys i wneud cais am brydau ysgol am ddim.

Maent hefyd yn helpu gyda sefydlu tenantiaethau newydd, cysylltu a landlordiaid ac awdurdodau.

Mae Llinell gymorth C.A.L.L. yn llinell gymorth bwrpasol ar gyfer iechyd meddwl. Mae’n cynnig cymorth cyfrinachol i’ch helpu i ddod o hyd i’r cymorth sydd ar gael yn eich ardal leol. Mae hyn yn cynnwys mudiadau gwirfoddol ac elusennol.
