Welcome to the latest e-news bulletin for the Torfaen Learning Zone.
The naming of the Torfaen Learning Zone was announced on the 19th of November as part of the official sod cutting ceremony.
Although the foundations were well underway, the ceremonial sod cutting ceremony marked a significant milestone in the construction of the new £24 million learning centre due to open in September 2020.
The Leader of Torfaen Council, councillor Anthony Hunt said: ‘The ceremonial sod cutting of the Torfaen Learning Zone was a landmark day for the council and helps secure a more sustainable way of delivering post 16 education in Torfaen. Our motivation as always is our learners, and making sure they will be able to access the broadest possible curriculum and quality of provision into the future.’
Coleg Gwent’s Principal, Guy Lacey added: ‘The event marks a key milestone in the development of this fantastic facility for all of Torfaen. It’s a celebration of what is to come and we very much look forward to welcoming our first learners when we open the doors in 2020.’
This new Coleg Gwent campus will be the home of all English language A Level education in Torfaen and will also offer students the Welsh Baccalaureate and a range of vocational qualifications.
The new centre replaces three English medium school sixth forms in the borough and will be managed and run by Coleg Gwent in partnership with the council.
The centre will provide the pathway for Torfaen students into higher education, training and employment.

Cyhoeddwyd enw Parth Dysgu Torfaen ar 19eg Tachwedd fel rhan o’r seremoni swyddogol i dorri’r dywarchen.
Er bod y gwaith ar y sylfeini eisoes ar y gweill, roedd y seremoni i dorri’r dywarchen yn garreg filltir o ran adeiladu’r ganolfan ddysgu £24 miliwn newydd sydd i agor ym mis Medi 2020.
Meddai Arweinydd Cyngor Torfaen, y cynghorydd Anthony Hunt: ‘Roedd seremoni torri’r dywarchen ar gyfer Parth Dysgu Torfaen yn ddiwrnod pwysig i’r cyngor ac mae’n helpu i sicrhau ffordd fwy cynaliadwy o gyflwyno addysg ôl-16 yn Nhorfaen. Ein cymhelliad bob amser yw ein dysgwyr, a gwneud yn siŵr y medrent fwynhau’r cwricwlwm gorau posibl ac ansawdd darpariaeth at y dyfodol.’
Ychwanegodd Pennaeth Coleg Gwent, Guy Lacey: ‘Mae’r digwyddiad yn nodi carreg filltir allweddol o ran datblygu’r cyfleusterau rhagorol hyn i Dorfaen gyfan. Mae’n ddathliad o’r hyn sydd i ddod ac rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr at groesawu ein dysgwyr cyntaf pan agorwn y drysau yn 2020.’
Bydd campws newydd Coleg Gwent yn gartref i holl addysg lefel A Saesneg ei hiaith yn Nhorfaen a bydd hefyd yn cynnig Bagloriaeth Cymru ac ystod o gymwysterau galwedigaethol i fyfyrwyr.
Mae’r ganolfan newydd yn disodli tri chweched dosbarth ysgol Saesneg eu hiaith yn y fwrdeistref a bydd yn cael ei rhedeg gan Goleg Gwent mewn partneriaeth â’r cyngor.
Bydd y ganolfan yn darparu llwybr i fyfyrwyr Torfaen i addysg uwch, hyfforddiant a chyflogaeth.
Latest curriculum news – there’s lots of choice!
Following work between Coleg Gwent and all borough’s secondary schools to align curriculums and study materials, the number of A levels on offer in Cwmbran has increased to 26 with the addition of PE and the number of vocational qualifications has increased from 13 to 16.
