Children create book to inspire future health and social carers

Pupils from a Torfaen primary school have helped produce a book aimed at inspiring children to become the health and social care workers of the future.

Blenheim Road Community Primary School pupils have worked with the Gwent Regional Partnership, Aneurin Bevan Health Board and Petra Publishing to produce the book, Billy the Superhero.

Billy is a young boy who loves superheroes and is inspired to become a doctor after seeing the way health and social care professionals cared for his nan.

Through Billy’s story, the book introduces the topic of health and social care to children with the aim of sparking an interest in its rewarding career prospects. The book will be made available to every primary school, library and GP practice in Gwent.

The story was developed by Year 6 pupils with support from storyteller, Mike Church from Petra publishing company.

As part of the project, professionals from the health and social care sector (nurse, occupational therapists and a home carer) visited the pupils to talk about their roles and help inspire the children and the story.

Cllr David Yeowell, executive member for education, said:

“This has been a fantastic project where the Year 6 pupils have gained a huge amount, not just in the creative process of writing the story but through the wonderful team spirit, research and learning that supports it.

I hope it has inspired many of them to think about careers in health and social care and become ‘heroes’ just like Billy. It’s also wonderful to see the health and social care sectors working so closely with the children and teachers in our schools. I’d like to congratulate everyone involved.”

Tanya Strange, Associate Director of Nursing at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said:

“In 2017, an inquiry into loneliness and isolation recognised the benefits of intergenerational contact. Over the past year, the Health Board and its partners in Gwent have worked together to increase intergenerational activity through an agreed strategy, which was launched this month (December).

“Intergenerational practice is bringing generations together in mutually beneficial activities. This work is promoting greater understanding and respect between generations. This will contribute to more cohesive communities by building on the positive resources that the young and old have to offer each other.

“Children exposed to experiential learning are now expressing a wish to work in the caring sector. This book hopes to introduce the topic of health and social care to children, encourage them to reach their potential and spark their interest in pursuing careers in the NHS.”

Plant yn creu llyfr i ysbrydoli gofalwyr iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol y dyfodol

Mae disgyblion o ysgol gynradd yn Nhorfaen wedi helpu i gynhyrchu llyfr sydd wedi'i anelu at ysbrydoli plant i ddod yn weithwyr iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol yn y dyfodol.

Mae disgyblion Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Blenheim Road wedi gweithio gyda Phartneriaeth Ranbarthol Gwent, Bwrdd Iechyd Aneurin Bevan a Petra Publishing i gynhyrchu'r llyfr, Billy the Superhero.

Mae Billy yn fachgen ifanc sy'n caru arch-arwyr ac yn cael ei ysbrydoli i ddod yn feddyg ar ôl gweld y ffordd y mae gweithwyr iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol proffesiynol yn gofalu am ei fam-gu.

Drwy stori Billy, mae'r llyfr yn cyflwyno pwnc iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol i blant gyda'r nod o ennyn diddordeb ynddo fel gyrfa hynod o werth chweil. Bydd y llyfr ar gael i bob ysgol gynradd, pob llyfrgell a meddygfa yng Ngwent.

Datblygwyd y stori gan ddisgyblion Blwyddyn 6 gyda chymorth gan yr adroddwr storïau, Mike Church o gwmni cyhoeddi Petra.

Fel rhan o'r prosiect, fe wnaeth gweithwyr proffesiynol o'r sector iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol (nyrs, therapyddion galwedigaethol a gofalwr cartref) ymweld â'r disgyblion i siarad am eu rolau a helpu i ysbrydoli'r plant a'r stori.

Dywedodd y Cyng. David Yeowell, aelod gweithredol dros addysg:

"Mae hwn wedi bod yn brosiect gwych lle mae disgyblion Blwyddyn 6 wedi elwa cryn dipyn, nid yn unig yn y broses greadigol o ysgrifennu'r stori ond trwy hyfrydwch gweithio fel tîm, ymchwilio a'r dysgu sy'n ei gefnogi.

Rwy'n gobeithio ei fod wedi ysbrydoli llawer ohonynt i feddwl am yrfaoedd yn y maes iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol a dod yn 'arwyr' yn union fel Billy. Mae hefyd yn wych gweld y sectorau iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol yn gweithio mor agos gyda'r plant a'r athrawon yn ein hysgolion. Hoffwn longyfarch pawb a gymerodd rhan."

Dywedodd Tanya Strange, Cyfarwyddwr Cysylltiol Nyrsio ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Aneurin Bevan:

"Yn 2017, fe wnaeth ymchwiliad i unigrwydd ac unigedd gydnabod manteision y cyswllt rhwng y cenedlaethau. Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae'r Bwrdd Iechyd a'i bartneriaid yng Ngwent wedi cydweithio i gynyddu gweithgarwch rhwng y cenedlaethau trwy strategaeth gytûn, a lansiwyd y mis hwn (Rhagfyr).

"Mae arferion rhyng-genedlaethol yn dod â chenedlaethau at ei gilydd mewn gweithgareddau sy'n fuddiol i'r ddwy ochr. Mae'r gwaith hwn yn hyrwyddo mwy o ddealltwriaeth a pharch rhwng y cenedlaethau. Bydd hyn yn cyfrannu at gymunedau mwy cydlynol trwy adeiladu ar yr adnoddau cadarnhaol sydd gan yr ifanc a'r hen i'w cynnig i'w gilydd.

"Mae plant sy'n agored i ddysgu trwy brofiad bellach yn mynegi'r awydd i weithio yn y sector gofal. Gobaith y llyfr hwn yw cyflwyno pwnc iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol i blant, eu hannog i gyrraedd eu potensial a sbarduno'u diddordeb mewn dilyn gyrfaoedd yn y GIG. "
