Residents' recycling survey

Bin Waste and Recycling Collections

We are in the process of refreshing our waste management strategy to reflect Welsh Government targets requiring us to recycle 70% of all residential waste by 2025. We currently recycle about 58% of our waste and as part of this process we are asking you how can we enable you and your neighbours to recycle more.

  • How can we improve our service to enable residents to recycle more?
  • What should we do if residents refuse to recycle?
  • How can we encourage more businesses, charities, community groups and other organisations to use our recycling services?

The results will be collated and used to inform the council’s future waste management strategy. To have your say visit our website.

cooking oil

Cooking oil recycling success

Residents recycled 2400 litres of cooking oil last year, generating enough clean energy to power three average-sized homes for about a year.

Used cooking oil can be recycled at the household waste recycling centre in New Inn, and is processed into clean energy.

Just one litre of used oil can power a TV for three hours, a phone charger for 1000 hours, or provide enough energy to make 240 cups of tea.

plant pots

Lots of pots

With lots of residents taking advantage of the weather to do a spot of gardening, we are finding an increasing number of plant and flower pots in the black recycling boxs. Unfortunately we can't recycle this kind of hard plastic - it can either be put out in your wheelie bin, or taken to the household waste recycling centre. We have a full list of what can/can't go in the black box here

broken glass

Broken drinking glasses

Please wrap any broken drinking glasses in newspaper and place them into your skinny wheelie bin so they can be disposed of safely. Crews sort the recycling from the black boxes by hand and although they do wear protective gear, broken glass can still pose a serious risk.

food waste

Remove packaging when recycling food

Please remember to remove any packaging from your food waste before it goes into the brown caddy for recycling. Most food packaging such as plastic containers or paper bags can be put into the black recycling box, while cellophane wrappers and cling film will need to be put into the purple-lidded wheelie bin for disposal.

bin personalisation

Personalise waste containers

Why not personalise your purple-lidded wheelie bins, black recycling boxes, blue cardboard bags and brown food caddies to help prevent them being lost or stolen. Personalising a bin or container with your property number will make them less likely to be stolen, and will help our crews return them to the right location.
