The education minister, Huw Lewis, officially opened Cwmbran High School.
Cwmbran High School replaced Fairwater and Llantarnam secondary schools, following a £6million investment from Torfaen council’s 21st Century Schools programme. This project has been match funded by the Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.
The Welsh Government’s ambitious 21st Century Schools and Education Programme is a commitment to invest in building and improving schools all over Wales. It aims to transform the learning experience of students, ensuring they are taught in classrooms with the technologies and facilities needed to deliver a 21st Century curriculum.

Mr Jonathan Bussy joined Nant Celyn primary school in January.Originally from Rochdale, Mr Bussy studied at Bangor University before starting his career in Education at a school in Manchester. Moving to Cwmbran soon after with wife, Gemma, he moved to a teaching role at Llanedeyrn, Cardiff before securing a deputy head teacher role in a school in Newport and his first headship in Cardiff.

More than 1000 year six pupils from Torfaen schools have taken part in the Crucial Crew, an annual event that teaches pupils about personal safety, sustainability and other skills that may be useful as they transition into comprehensive school.

Former Torfaen foster carers Carol and Kate Johnson have told their story in support of LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (7th-13th March 2016). LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week is a national campaign run by New Family Social to find more families for children by making the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community aware of the benefits and reality of adoption and fostering.

More than 70 members of the Torfaen business community attended the first Torfaen Business Voice networking event of 2016 at Greenmeadow Golf Club on Thursday (10 March). As well as the opportunity to network, businesses heard from Andrew Tuggey, High Sheriff of Gwent, about the Gwent High Sheriffs' Community Fund and the work it does helping disadvantaged young people in the community

All veterans living with the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma, as a result of their Service are set to receive lump sum compensation pay-outs as a result of a campaign spearheaded by The Royal British Legion. In December 2015 the Government announced changes to its compensation scheme which meant that veterans – yet to be diagnosed with the cancer – could receive either regular smaller payments or a new one-off tax-free lump sum of £140,000, which was in line with arrangements for civilians.

On 7 March 2016 at Cwmbran magistrates court, Mr Michal Salacki of Henllys, Cwmbran pleaded guilty to twenty charges in relation to the sale of motor cars in breach of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.
