Blaenavon’s popular art and craft shop and Post Office is the first business in the town centre, and the first Post Office in Gwent, to become Dementia Friendly.
The staff at Artie Craftie on Broad Street have all undertaken training to become Dementia Friends, learning how to recognise signs of dementia, and how they can make the business more accessible to customers who live with the condition.
They were awarded their certificate from Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, who praised the team for their efforts.
Torfaen is the third Dementia County in Wales and Pontypool Museum, Big Pit, and traders at Pontypool Indoor Market have already become Dementia Friendly.

Over 50 large gift bags have been donated to the elderly this Christmas thanks to St Albans RC School pupil Maddy Fitzgerald-Wilkins. Maddy saw the touching Man on the Moon advert by John Lewis and wanted to do something to make sure our older generation didn’t feel alone this Christmas. Gift bags have been donated from all over including radios, clothes, food and much more. In conjunction with Age Connects Torfaen, Maddy organised a party at the Widdershins Centre in Pontypool where 28 of the gift bags were given out by members of the Newport Gwent Dragons.

Torfaen council made more than seven million waste and recycling collections in April 2014 to March 2015 performance figures show. Of the collections made, just 0.04 per cent were missed in error. A total of 2855 collections were deliberately left to due issues of contamination – these residents were then visited by a waste awareness officer. The council delivered about 16,989 wheelie bins and recycling containers during this time, with about 94 per cent of deliveries completed within the council’s two week standard. Most of the waste produced by the average household in Torfaen can be recycled at the kerbside. Not sure what waste can be recycled? A handy guide to what can be recycled in each container is available on the council’s website.
