 Recycling rates on the rise
Early figures show that Torfaen residents recycled an extra 165 tonnes of food waste, and 249 tonnes of general recycling in December 2015/January 2016, compared to the same time in 2014/15. The rise in recycling follows the introduction of smaller, 140 litre wheelie bins in November 2015. The new smaller bins were introduced to meet strict recycling targets that require councils in Wales to recycle 70 per cent of waste by 2025.

 Remove packaging when recycling food
Residents are reminded to remove any packaging from their food waste before it goes into the brown caddy for recycling. Most food packaging such as plastic containers or paper bags can be put into the black recycling box, while cellophane wrappers and cling film will need to be put into the purple-lidded wheelie bin for disposal.

 Pupils build recycling centre
Pupils from Maendy Primary School in Cwmbran have created their own recycling centre as part of a class project. The year two and three pupils visited Viridor’s recycling station in Ty Coch, where Torfaen residents’ recycling is taken when it is collected from the kerbside, and decided to build their own back in their classroom. They created the recycling centre using black recycling boxes, cardboard bags and food waste caddies.

 Personalise waste containers
Residents are encouraged to number their purple-lidded wheelie bins, black recycling boxes, blue cardboard bags and brown food caddies to help prevent them being lost or stolen. Personalising a bin or container with a property number will make them less likely to be stolen, and will help crews return them to the right location.
