Combe Pafford Consultation
We wanted to let you know about consultation that Combe Pafford School is launching today. This is the start of a consultation process about changing its status from a school for children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) to one focused on supporting children with autistic spectrum condition (ASC).
This proposal reflects the growing needs in Torbay, where there are currently four times as many children diagnosed with ASC than MLD. ASC is now the fastest-growing area of need among secondary-aged pupils in our community.
Combe Pafford is well-positioned to meet this demand, with its strong expertise, excellent facilities, and vocational programmes. Transitioning to an ASC-designated school would allow more children with autism to receive tailored support in an environment designed for them. Many of them are currently in mainstream settings that may not fully meet their needs.
What does this mean for current pupils?
Families of children with MLD currently attending Combe Pafford can rest assured: their places will remain secure. The transition will be gradual, phased in over several years, with the aim that eventually all pupils at the school will have ASC.
What happens if the proposal is approved?
-
The school will receive additional funding to enhance specialist support.
-
Class sizes and overall pupil numbers will remain unchanged.
-
The change will help ensure children with autism in Torbay receive the support they deserve.
