Spotlight on our Immunisation Coordination team

Immunisation team

We are proud to spotlight our Immunisation coordination team whose timely work contributes to the safety of our local residents in Tower Hamlets.

Created in August 2022, the team’s purpose is to support GP practices with immunisations, working alongside the local authority, community advocacy services and the local NHS on immunisation support and to improve patient care in Tower Hamlets.

All Age Immunisation and Population Screening Coordinator, Sharon Sridhara, expands on the team’s strategic goals. She said: “We are passionate about supporting practices to increase vaccination numbers in line with national targets. We are working alongside GPs to embed sustainable systems - supporting training needs, sharing best practices, and co-designing a ‘gold standard’ recall system.

“Our team is also committed to addressing vaccine inequalities, by working with a range of community stakeholders and playing a key role in patient engagement.”

Excellent feedback for our School Health Team

school nurse

The Tower Hamlets 0-19 School Health Team works in partnership with schools in the borough to gain an understanding of the younger population’s health needs and medical requirements. Through a range of screening programmes, health promotion sessions, and regular drop-in sessions, our team of nurses, nursery nurses, and support workers aim to improve the physical, emotional, and mental health of the children, young people, and families within the community.

The team regularly receives great feedback from schools in the borough. Read on to hear some of the most recent feedback shared.

“I would like to say thank you to Selina Parris for all her hard work and enthusiasm, she is a fabulous school nurse, and I am proud to have her in my team.”

The Advisory Teacher wished to pass on a compliment from Mulberry Girls School: “The School Nurse was amazing and excellent when working with a young person who was overweight”.

Two Youth Advisors become Apprentices

The Care Group’s School Health team is proud to announce that their two Youth Advisors, Marni and Shahker (who joined the Care Group in 2021) have started their apprenticeship as Healthcare Support Workers within the team.

Both attend college and a practical day in Primary Care health settings once a month. They also support the Child Health Nursery Nurses with the National Childhood Measurement Programme for Year 6 and Reception children, and the Reception Screening.

What happened at our latest Health and Wellbeing event...?

Wellbeing Feb 2022

An organisation is only as good as the people who work for it, which is why the GP Care Group places great importance on promoting good mental health and togetherness in our workplace.

As part of this aim, earlier this month we held our latest Health and Wellbeing Day for our Care Group workforce.

Our Health and Wellbeing Days are aimed at bringing Care Group colleagues together to take part in relaxing social events and to enjoy delicious food and refreshments provided by the Women’s Inclusive Team. The day was filled with yoga exercises for colleagues to engage in mindfulness, good posture, and stress-relief, a skipping challenge, and Jenga to improve concentration.

The games were on with colleagues getting stuck into Chinese New Year inspired cookie decorating to showcase their artistic talents.

Parents, get extra nursing support for children who are overweight

child obseity

Did you know the Child Health Nursery Nurses (CHNN), Public Health and the Healthy Weight Team are running a pilot project as part of the National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP)?

By working together with partners in the local authority CHNN provides extra support in five Tower Hamlets primary schools for children who have been identified as being overweight and very overweight following their growth checks. Childhood obesity is higher in London and boroughs that are more deprived and so NCMP aims to tackle this health issue by data gathered from children.

The GP Care Group supports employers and existing colleagues in development through apprenticeship programmes. To mark the national celebration the Training Hub (CEPN) spoke to 0-19 Central Adminstrator, Michael John and P-RESET Officer, Tariq Wooding-Olajorin to find out why they chose to do an apprenticeship, their journey so far and next steps with their apprenticeship qualification.

Have your say on pharmacy services

Pharmacy

Did you know you can share your views on pharmacies in Tower Hamlets?

Tower Hamlets Council is inviting residents to read the draft Tower Hamlets Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment report and share their views on whether pharmacy services are meeting their health and wellbeing needs.

The report will be used to identify the need for new pharmacies, review any applications for new pharmacy provision or approving any changes to existing contracts.

You can have your say until 31 March.

Reminder: No more COVID-19 boosters unless you are vulnerable

vaccine

Did you know that the offer of COVID-19 booster jabs for those 16 years and over ended on Sunday 12 February?

This news was announced by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). It means that Sunday 12 February was the last chance for anyone who has been invited for a COVID booster to take up their offer, until future campaigns are agreed by the JCVI and government.

The booster vaccines are now only being offered to those considered to be at risk of serious illness to increase their immunity. The NHS will continue to operate a smaller scale vaccine offer from mid-February onwards to ensure those eligible for first and second doses can still get their jabs.

Recognising LGBT+ History month at The Care Group

LGBT

February is LGBT+ History Month and so a great time to shine the spotlight on some of the remarkable figures who have campaigned for the end of discrimination and persecution of people in the LGBTQ+ community.

Throughout the month of February, we have highlighted many LGBTQ+ icons. This includes transgender computer scientist Lynn Conway; enduring gay rights activist Peter Tatchell; New York artist and social activist Keith Haring; and artist Paul Hanfleet.

By taking the time to learn about others we can create a more inclusive world in the Care Group and beyond.
