Protect yourself, family and friends

The autumnal drop in temperatures and the increased variability in the weather is a sure sign that winter is not far off.

In addition to living with Covid-19, we will soon be entering the flu season.

In an average year, seasonal flu kills almost 11,000 people and hospitalises  tens of thousands.  More people are likely to get flu this winter as fewer people will have built up natural immunity to it during the pandemic and research shows that if you get flu and Covid-19 at the same time, you're more likely to be seriously ill.

Essential winter protection. There are two essential vaccines that you may need this winter - flu and COVID-19 booster.
Look out for your winter vaccines invite

Getting vaccinated against seasonal flu and Covid-19 will provide protection for you and those around you against both these serious illnesses.

Anyone 50 and over by 31 March 2022 can get a free flu jab as well as for example those who are pregnant, have certain health conditions, receive a carers allowance or live with someone who is more likely to get infections. You can check out whether you are eligible at   A free nasal flu spray vaccine is also available to children and you can find out more at

16-17 year olds can get their Covid jabs at drop in centres

Last weekend the Department of Health and Social Care announced that all 16 and 17-year-olds can now book their first Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

They can now book online a jab at either a vaccination centre or pharmacy or find a Covid-19 vaccination walk-in site without needing an appointment.  The nearest walk-in centres for Teignbridge are at Exeter’s Greendale Vaccination Centre  or at Plymouth Albion in Devonport, Plymouth.

Where young people can’t book on line, they can call 119 free of charge to book one

Neither under 16s and or those waiting for booster covid jabs can use walk-in sites to get vaccinated and should wait to be contacted by the NHS.

Our leisure team is running more Sports Camps at Dawlish and Newton Abbot Leisure Centres during the October half term.

All sessions at the camps are fun, creative and well organised. They are delivered by fully qualified and experienced coaches, with a full DBS check in place, and will run for multiple days throughout the school holidays. Each day is different to ensure children get the most out of them.

Aimed at 5-14 year olds, the camps enable children to try new things, learn new skills, work as a team and most importantly have fun whilst getting active. All abilities are welcome and equipment will be provided. More information about the activities are on the Teignbridge Leisure website

Dates and times of the October camps are also on the Teignbridge Leisure website.
