The ‘Somerset Economic Futures’ work has been commissioned by Somerset County Council in partnership with Somerset’s District Councils to develop a series of potential future economic scenarios for Somerset over the next 5, 10 and 25 years.
The aim is to develop a range of evidence-based scenarios, exploring the impact of adopting differing economic development priorities and how this might affect Somerset’s short- and longer-term outcomes.
How will Somerset respond to and make the most of global and national challenges – from climate change and public health crises to a rapidly ageing rural population, to transformational technological progress through to local opportunities through the forming of the new Somerset Unitary Authority, Hinkley Point C and challenges around, for example flooding, coastal erosion, and large rural poorly connected areas?
A comprehensive review of local, regional, national and global priorities and identification of Somerset’s strengths, issues of concern, opportunities and challenges has been completed. Information collated from this stage has been used to stimulate development of the initial scenarios.
We are now opening this up to wider engagement and discussion. If you are interested and would like to comment please review the document and respond to the questions posed. You can join a discovery workshop on 20th October where the emerging scenarios will be presented, tested, and discussed, to allow for further development and refinement – the deadline for responses to the engagement questions is 31 October 2022.
To register for a workshop please visit the Somerset Futures website at: https://www.somerset.gov.uk/business-and-economy/somerset-futures/
