Try a Supported Internship in Stoke-on-Trent
It’s Inclusion Week, and we’re celebrating chances for everyone to feel included. If you’re a young person with SEND, a Supported Internship (SI) is a great way to get ready for a job.
What is a supported internship?
A supporting internship is a mix of learning and working. You will:
- Spend most of your time in a real workplace
- Get help from a job coach who’s there to support you
- Keep learning things like English, Maths, and skills you need for work
You don’t need any qualifications to join - just an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and a willingness to work.
Who runs them in Stoke-on-Trent?
Many organisations offer internships that match your interests and give you the support you need.:
- Abbey Hill College
- Mencap
- Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group
- Newfriars
- Pinc College
- Reaseheath College
- Stoke-on-Trent College
- Strathmore College
How long do SIs last?
Internships usually last 6 to 12 months during the school year. They’re not paid, but they can help you get a job in the future.
Who Can Apply?
If you’re aged 16–24, have an EHCP, and want to develop the skills you need for working, you can apply – there are no qualifications required. You’ll usually talk about it during your Annual Review, and the SENMAS team will help with next steps.
Why It’s Great for Inclusion Week
Inclusion Week is about making sure everyone gets a fair chance. Supported Internships do just that - they help young people with SEND build skills, confidence, and independence to succeed in the workplace.
