Save the Date for Annual Conference

Beaudesert Golf club

As you know 2025 marks the start of our new five year management plan for Cannock Chase National Landscape, setting out our ambitions to do more for Nature, Climate, People and Place.   It is fitting, therefore, that the theme of this year’s conference is how to make the Plan happen.  So we invite you to join with us and our contributors and other delegates to explore how we can work together, collaboratively, creatively and more inclusively to turn our ambitions into reality.

The Conference is being hosted by Beau Desert Golf Club, a championship heathland golf course set in the heart of the National Landscape on Thursday 19th June 2025. More details and how to book will be forwarded when available.

Biker

Thank you for participating and responding to the online survey of the draft Management Plan 2025-2030. All responses have been collated and will be included in the final plan accordingly.

Next step is for the final revisions to be made to the Plan and taken to National Landscape Joint Committee in March for final approval. The Plan will then be published and available on our website and in print form. Timetable and further information can be found on the link below.

Shaping Shugborough

Shaping Shugborough

Work is underway on Shugborough’s long term programme of conservation and visitor facility improvements’ Shaping Shugborough: Designing a sustainable future’. This includes improving access, car parking, visitor welcome facilities and importantly a new play area. In the weeks leading up to Christmas the contractors, O’Brien’s, began setting up their compound. With the help of specialists, such as Archaeologists they have begun work on developing the new coach and vehicle entrance.
The construction of the new facilities will take place across 58 weeks, and they will be sharing updates on their website and social media platforms.

Habitat Creation

Birchwood trees

The Farming in Protected Landscapes programme is continuing to work with farmers and land managers across the Chase to deliver a range of exciting environmental projects.

The photograph shows new hedgerows and hedgerow trees being established near Little Haywood.  Over 500m of new hedgerows and 7 hedgerow trees have been planted here, along with a new wildlife copse.  Wildlife boxes for nesting birds and roosting bats have also been installed as well as new livestock fencing and wooden field gates.

Peatland Assessment Progressing

We have commissioned consultants to carry out a desk study to provide greater clarity on the presence and extent, and character and condition of peaty soils within Cannock Chase National Landscape. This has been progressing and we will be able to update further on results and next steps.

Veteran Tree Assessments

Volunteers and officers were recently out on the Chase learning how to assess and record our ancient trees using the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory.  11 previously unrecorded trees were added to the Inventory during the training session!  The National Landscape Team will shortly publish information how people can get involved in the Ancient Tree Inventory and help to improve our knowledge about these living monuments.
