Free training - Unlock the potential of every child: Early years EAL training
This training session, suitable for childminders and practitioners in nurseries including those on a school site, aims to empower you with the knowledge and tools to support children with English as an Additional Language (EAL). It will support practitioners to:-
• Gain an understanding of the complexities of learning English as an additional language, • Explore stages of language acquisition • Support silent children • Identify risk factors for underachievement • Promote cultural identity • Develop key approaches and explore practices, tools, and resources to support everyday practice
The session will be delivered face-to-face by a member of the Stronger Practice Hub. Only one place per setting can be offered.

Free - SSCP Early Help Assessment training
This course, delivered by Staffordshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (SSCP), is aimed at Designated Leads and other practitioners who will be undertaking an Early Help assessment (this is mandatory for those partners who will be holders of an on-line Outcome Star license as the training is accredited).
Applicants must have undertaken SSCP Level 1 Child Protection training before attending this course.
The course aims to increase your understanding of Early Help:-
- to be able to complete the Outcome Star collaboratively with families/parents/carers
- to use the Outcome Star for effective gathering of family information to inform the Early Help assessment
- to understand the Journey of Change
- use the Outcome Star to support action planning
- to revisit the threshold framework.

Free - Early language and communication network
The next free early language and communication network takes place on Thursday 23 January 2025 at 1:00pm to 2:30pm via MS teams.
This is open to anyone with an interest in early communication development in Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire. The agenda will cover the family hub offer, supporting children with English as an additional language, a Makaton taster and updates of new resources available.

Update to EYFS profile handbook
The DfE have recently updated the guidance on completing the EYFS profile assessment.
This guidance is for:
- reception and key stage 1 teachers and teams, or other early years practitioners where relevant
- headteachers and setting managers
This handbook will help teachers and other early years practitioners to complete the EYFS profile assessment in line with the statutory requirements in the EYFS framework.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
Ofsted have updated their guidance to include reference to the new childcare provider type 'childminders without domestic premises'. They have clarified that DBS checks are not required for staff working in the same premises as a childminder without domestic premises, but who are not looking after children.
