Safeguarding and welfare requirements
Suitable people pg. 23 – 3.9 group and school provision
Providers must ensure that people looking after children are suitable, have relevant qualifications, training and have passed checks to fulfil their roles. Safer recruitment is a key role in leadership and management duties.
A safer recruitment quick guide has been developed and is now available on the Staffordshire Safeguarding Children Board website. This guide supports the policies and procedures and are the basics to ensure that staff are suitable. It is the leadership and management responsibility to remain vigilant and ensure that there is a golden thread of safer recruitment throughout the setting and are not just relying on the policies, procedures and checks.
Points to consider: - Remain vigilant means having the ability to think critically and have a level of curiosity that tests out your own and others thinking around safe practice. You must assume it does happen and be open to the idea that anyone who wants to abuse children will get through your safer recruitment processes. Where there is a culture and high level of vigilance right from the moment you recruit it helps filters out the ones who would be exposed.
Keep your safer recruitment process robust:-
- How do you know this is the case?
- How do you know your safer recruitment policies & procedures are effective?
- Do you have a safe culture and a healthy set of behaviours in your setting which can filter out unsuitable applicants?
- How do you ensure your job advert places value on safeguarding, and this is a running theme throughout your recruitment, induction, and employment processes?
- How do you promote safe practice?

- When was the last time a safer recruitment training was completed?
- Has the committee run setting have a member of the committee complete a safer recruitment training?

PVI Manager Network Meetings

We are aware that some settings in the sector are stand alone and do not necessarily have access to support networks. These sessions are intended not only to deliver updates, but to be a forum to share good practice, share challenges and use collective knowledge and experience to solve problems.
This term we are delighted that Debbie Nash, Family Hubs – Continuous Improvement Partner will be joining us to discuss the Staffordshire Family Hub model.
- Family Hubs are being developed across Staffordshire
- It can be confusing and difficult for families, professionals, and partners to know who to contact or what support is available to access.
- Staffordshire’s Family Hub Model will deliver support to families with children 0-19 (25 with SEND) of which the EY sector is a key partner.
- We have an existing network of 13 Family Hubs across the 8 districts.
- Come and find out more about your local Family Hub, the support available and how you can contribute.
