A new award and challenge badge has been launched in Staffordshire for members of Scouting and Girlguiding to get outdoors and explore Cannock Chase’s landscape, nature and heritage.
The Future Guardians of Cannock Chase programme aims to boost awareness and appreciation amongst
children and young people about the Chase, the wonderful national landscape they have on their doorstep and to encourage them to care for the environment. The hope is that today’s youngsters will be the Future Guardians of Cannock Chase tomorrow. All resource content, including activity sheets for children of all ages, activity and leader packs for girlguides, scouts and Duke of Edinburgh awards can be found on the Future Guardians of Cannock Chase website. With summer holidays around the corner download your activity sheets now.

Features of Cannock Chase

A new glossy, colourful guide of the features of Cannock Chase has been published by the Field Studies Council in conjunction with the Cannock Chase National Landscape Partnership.

The guide has over 50 beautifully illustrated species which you can find on Cannock Chase.

The Cannock Chase berry is one of the illustrations together with other special protected wildlife such as the nightjar, adder, lapwing and buzzard.

Copies are available to purchase in a variety of local retailers and on Amazon.

Caring for the Nightjar

Nightjar code

We want all our visitors to enjoy visiting and using the Chase safely. Please consider the following to help protect and avoid harm to ground nesting birds such as the nightjar.

Keep dogs on leads during the main breeding period, from April to August, to avoid putting nightjar and other ground-nesting birds at risk.

Be aware that cycling can be a risk to nightjar, particularly at night with lights, as the birds rest and forage on forest roads and tracks. The use of powerful lights to illuminate forest roads and tracks could dazzle the birds, increasing the risk of them being run over.

Remember electric bikes are quiet, the birds will not hear you coming.

West Midlands Bird Club has produced a Guide to ethical bird photography which provides further information.
