South Staffordshire Council shortlisted for UK Planning Authority of the Year
South Staffordshire Council has been shortlisted for the UK Planning Authority of the Year award.
It is among just seven authorities across the country to be in the running for the prestigious national accolade from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
The shortlisting follows South Staffordshire Council’s success in being named RTPI Planning Authority of the Year - West Midlands back in June. The summer ceremony also saw the authority scoop the RTPI Chair’s Special Award for staff development and progression.
Lead planning manager at the council, Kelly Harris, has also been shortlisted for the national Inspirational Leader of the Year award by RTPI. She is among just eight leaders from across the UK to have made it to the shortlist.
The winners for both awards will be revealed at a ceremony in London on Tuesday, November 21.

Locality enablers: Working to benefit local communities
Please see a range of updates below on what our locality enablers have achieved, working alongside communities in the district.
Wheaton Aston allotments
We have liaised with Wheaton Aston Parish Council and have worked closely to enable an abandoned open space to become an allotment site which will encourage budding green fingered residents to grow their own produce while keeping fit. .
Slow cookers
We also worked with Staffordshire County Council on delivering 100 slow cookers to Codsall Village Hall to support families in need of help during the cost-of-living crisis. It was well attended, and all slow cookers are accounted for.
There will be similar event in Wombourne on October 23rd, in which 100 more slow cookers will be delivered and given to the most vulnerable families.
Walking for Health
We are working with Brewood to reignite a walking group to be like it was before the pandemic, as the numbers reduced and the walks ceased while the country was in lockdown.
Parish Summit
The locality enablers will be attending the Parish summit at the Codsall Community Hub on October 19th, where all parish councils in the district are invited to attend presentations on the following topics:
• Cost of living

World Mental Health Day: Keep your body and mind well
World Mental Health Day took place on Tuesday – a day to talk about Mental Health and show everyone that mental health matters.
It’s also a day to let people know that its OK to ask for your help, no matter what you’re going through.
There are little things we can all do to lift our mood or ease our anxiety – we need to find what works for us. This could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, prioritising our sleep or opening up to a friend. Our little thing, if we keep doing it, will make a big difference to how we feel.
Exercise and physical activity plays a vital role on not only keeping our bodies healthy but keeping our minds and general wellbeing healthy.
To find out what’s on at your nearest leisure centre visit https://www.sstaffs.gov.uk/sports-and-fitness
