Waste manager named among '35 under 35' rising stars
A team manager at South Staffordshire Council has been named among ‘35 under 35’ rising stars in the waste industry.
The national title was granted to Rachel Melvin, waste management and customer support team manager, by Let’s Recycle at the Resource and Waste Management Expo event last week.
In her nomination for the award, nominees called Rachel a ‘credit to’ and ‘valuable member of’ South Staffordshire Council, noting Rachel’s depth of knowledge and experience, and her ability to provide an alternative lens; and her willingness to innovate and explore new ways of working.

Street Scene team wins prestigious national award
South Staffordshire Council’s Street Scene team has been granted a prestigious national award.
They were named Service Team of the Year: Street Cleansing and Street Scene Service (Public Realm) by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) at the awards which took place at the Belfast Titanic Museum.
The team, which delivers street cleansing, grounds maintenance, environment crime, and bereavement services, was awarded the accolade at a ceremony on Friday (September 15th).

Four former councillors named honorary aldermen
Four former South Staffordshire Council elected members have been made honorary aldermen.
Those who received the title are Len Bates BEM, Brian Cox, Janet Johnson, and Christine Raven.
The title is given to ‘persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the council, but who are no longer councillors of the council’.

Leisure centres celebrate National Fitness Day
Wednesday September 20th marked National Fitness Day – a day to celebrate the lifelong benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and being active.
Our leisure centres entered all visitors on Wednesday into prize draws to win a fee-free month; in addition to free passes issued to all new users, a 'Bring a Friend for Free' offer and merchandise prizes for customers that completed a ‘My Health to Me’ board.
This week the leisure centres also provided free health checks in partnership with Everyone Health, consisting of checks on BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, bloody sugars and healthy eating and lifestyle advice.

October school holiday activity camps
This October half term, Codsall and Wombourne Leisure Centres are providing sports-based activity camps.
These will be available for children aged 5-14 years, delivered in conjunction with Aspire Sports.

Partnership updates
Eco event in Kinver
Kinver Climate Action Group is hosting it first Eco Energy Day next month.
The free event will feature a day of 'practical climate changing inspiration and information', says the group.
Attendees can hear from a number of speakers and visit a range of stalls.
"Come and join us to meet local people passionate about doing their bit for the environment and ready to share their ideas and expertise," says the group.
The event will take place at the Edward Marsh Centre in Legion Drive, Kinver, on October 1st.
It will run from 10am to 3pm.

Slow cooker event
Two community events on slow cookers are coming up next month.
The events will include cooking demonstrations, new low cost recipes, plus a slow cooker giveaway.
A range of voluntary and community organisations, activities and services will also be available.
The events will take place at:
- Codsall Village Hall on Tuesday, October 3rd, from 10am to 3pm
- Wombourne Library and Community Centre on Monday, October 23rd, from 10am to 3pm
History escape rooms at Perton Library
Discover what life was like for children during the Second World War or live a day in the life of a Roman soldier and learn how the past has shaped the world we live in today.
Crack codes, work out riddles and solve puzzles.
- Romans - 9.30am-10.30am
- Second World War – 11.10am-12.10pm
- Romans – 12.50pm-1.50pm
- Second World War – 2.30pm-3.30pm
The free event takes place on Saturday, October 7th.
