Join us in celebrating the opening of a collection of new exhibitions, exploring how the city of Southampton has, and continues to be a source of inspiration for artists.

The work of local artist Greg Gilbert is intimately connected to and influenced by Southampton; exploring notions of memory and its relationship to place. Much of the work created for Through Sand has been inspired by Southampton City Council's extensive archive, using historic postcards and photographs as stimulus the artist has created captivating miniature biro reliefs and paintings that are personal reflections on the city and its recent past.

Urban Sketchers Southampton

28 March – 14 June 

Featuring work created by Southampton’s Urban Sketchers, a group set up in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of city status, this exhibition showcases sketches made on location of the people, places and buildings that make up our city. 

Views of Southampton 20 March – 18 July From coastal scenes to architectural drawings, this exhibition reveals how artists have portrayed Southampton throughout history. The works on show are taken from Southampton City Art Gallery's world renowned collection, and feature paintings by established artists such as LS Lowry and Christopher Nevinson alongside local artists’ work, photographs and historical archive material.

Right Here explores the work of four artists who see the city of Southampton as a source of inspiration for their art.  All of the artists live, work, or have spent their childhood in Southampton and so their view of the city comes from direct experience, historical and family associations, or the built environment. The connections made by these artists are both surprising and familiar.
