Southampton Jazz Workshop takes on Bournemouth

swing unlimited

On 28 May, the Southampton Jazz Workshop played a phenomenal 45-minute support set of big band jazz at part of the Swing Unlimited Jazz Club event in Bournemouth, which was followed by Nick Willsher's Quartet and Sextet. The night featured some of the finest young jazz players in Southampton, and a great night was had by all.

One spectator said: "Superb band!! Loved it. Big shout to Jo and Tim for keeping this refreshing mix of young So'ton talent in such a tight band. Hurrah!!"

Don't miss: Southampton Jazz Workshop's performance at the Ejectorseat Arts Festival or at Hanger Farm Arts Centre this month!

The Big Family Sing - a huge success!

The Big Family Sing at Fairisle Infant School, took place over three days in May. Between 140 and 150 families were involved, which was their biggest turn out for 'family learning' ever! Participants learned some fun vocal warm-ups and how to preserve the good health of their vocal chords!

Speaking to our music service, the school said: "It was amazing, and so uplifting for all involved, with many many families coming to thank Emily Jefferies, organiser, for such a lovely experience."

The school is looking to extend its family learning experiences to include family art days. Please keep an eye out for more events...

Southampton music student makes it to Brit School

Here's another great example of how participation in music with Southampton Music Service can help students progress their musical endeavours! As a member of our group Groove Merchant, Erin made it to the world renowned Brit School to take a two-year BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music.

Erin's mum said: "Groove Merchant taught her how to harmonise and now she can't help harmonising to everything she listens to!  Having the opportunity to perform in lots of different venues with the band has really helped her confidence."

With the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jessie J, Leona Lewis, and Katie Melua (to name a few) as alumni, she has a lot to live up to (and look forward to!), and we wish Erin all the best!
