jazz award

Will Michael Jazz Education Awards

Southampton Music Services was invited to the Royal Academy of Music on 27 November to receive yet another award for outstanding commitment to Jazz Education. 

The Will Michael Jazz Education Awards are part of the National Music Council and the Music Education Council Local Authority Music Awards scheme. Full recognition was given to the outstanding quality of Jazz teaching provided by Southampton Music Services' tutors and the great results achieved by young jazzers in Southampton. Southampton congratulates this year's Mercury Music Award winner 

Earlier this month, indie rock band Alt-J were crowned the winners of this year's prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize, with their debut album An Awesome Wave. The band's frontman, Joe Newman, is an ex-Cantell student (as were previous nominees Jack Wyllie and Milo Fitzpatrick from Portico Quartet).

Debut Youth Theatre presents Alice in Wonderland

6 – 8 December / 7.30pm / Hanger Farm Arts Centre, Aikman Lane, Totton / Tickets £9, concessions £7 (group discounts available)

You are invited to join Alice on her madcap adventures in Wonderland. This fast-paced stage adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic novel features new arrangements of classic Disney songs such as “I’m Late”, “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” – a perfect pre-Christmas treat for the whole family.

Students of Richard Taunton Sixth Form College will be performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, universally considered to be one of his greatest masterpieces.

Music college applications

3 December / 4pm / Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, Hill Lane

Are you interested in finding out about the selection process undertaken by the most prestigious music colleges? Richard Taunton Sixth Form College is currently supporting ten such applications and invites you to a workshop about post -18 music-making options. This session will be followed by an opportunity to talk more widely about music education in the traditional, popular and technological fields, and the opportunities available for young people post-16.

Music you can walk inside

Benjamin Mawson (PhD Candidate Department of Music, University of Southampton) delivered a very special workshop to children from Highfield School on 16 November. Headteacher Allan King brought his students to the university campus to participate in a unique musical learning experience – music you can walk inside!

Orchestral Encounters

Sunday 24 February 2013 / Ages 6-12 / FREE / No audition

The National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain (NCO) would like to invite all children who play an orchestral instrument to this fantastic, fun day of music-making!

As well as rehearsing music together, participants will perform in a concert for family and friends at the end of the day.
