This Saturday is the last chance to see Invisible Portraits by Lucy Ash. This incredible and colourful exhibition highlights the LGBTIQ+ community through a series of abstract portraits. It includes two large co-created artworks from the local community in Southampton, along with leading LGBTIQ+ figures.
Lucy has also just released a new book to go with this amazing exhibition which is now available in the gallery.

The Saturday Art Club for Adults | Starts 28 January | 2pm-4pm | Southampton City Art Gallery | £18
Take time out for yourself, switch your phone off and slow down at our new creative group for grown ups. Each month artist and teacher Sarah L Goy will guide you to discover different media in a relaxing and exploratory way. All are welcome and all materials provided. The focus of these sessions is rest, relaxation and permission to experiment!

Life Drawing with Brian Reynolds: New Dates for 2023 | Spaces from 4 February | 11am | Southampton City Art Gallery | £40
Work at your own pace with individual feedback and tuition on hand as required from tutor Brian Reynolds in these relaxed and friendly sessions.
You are very welcome to bring your own drawing materials, although we will supply the basics. The day will run 11am - 4pm with a lunchbreak. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch and tea and coffee are provided. Book here

Join artist Simon Hitchens in conversation with Tim Craven as he explores both his work and the exhibition The Hitchens Family: A Shared Love of Landscape, which features work from four generations of artists: Alfred, Ivon, John and Simon Hitchens.
The talk will last around 45 minutes with time for questions and an opportunity to visit the exhibition afterwards before we close at 3pm. Book here
Hitchens inspired landscapes workshop | 25 February | 11am | Southampton City Art Gallery | £37
Inspired by our current exhibition, 'Hitchens Family: In Focus', learn to develop your own abstract response to a chosen inspirational landscape with watercolour and mixed media. We will spend the morning sketching in the exhibition, and work on a series of mixed media experiments using watercolour, inks, resists and collage in the afternoon. Please bring some images, a sketchbook and your own brushes if liked for the afternoon. All levels of experience welcome. This workshop will run from 11am - 4pm with a short break for lunch. Artists at War: Kenneth Clark and the War Artists Advisory Committee - A talk by Tim Craven | 9 March | 1.45pm | Southampton City Art Gallery | £6
An illustrated talk considering the vital role of Kenneth Clark in the establishment and success of British war art in WWII and examining the War Artists Advisory Committee. This talk will also illustrate the experiences and art practices of prominent war artists and how this extraorrdinary period in their lives would affect their later careers if they survived. In conclusion, Tim will share the legacy of the WAAC project which stays with us today.
This talk is programmed to accompany the work by war artists currently on display. It will last around an hour with a chance to visit the gallery before it closes at 3pm. Book here
Thinking Thursdays: Victorian Southampton | 16 March | 1.45pm | Tudor House | £8
Thinking Thursdays is a weekday initiative from Southampton City Council Cultural Services, exploring the rich history and heritage of the town. Each session is different, but it could be a talk, tour or something entirely different!
During the Victorian period Southampton grew rapidly as it embraced the new railways and docks. In this brand new walking tour, join your guide Andy Skinner for a walk around the town exploring some fantastic buildings from the 19th century and the stories they tell! Book here.
