Southampton's bid for UK City of Culture 2025
'We March On'
Following the government's decision (31 May) to select Bradford as UK City of Culture 2025, Southampton City Council, Solent University and the University of Southampton have committed to continue investing in the Southampton 2025 Trust to deliver against an agreed programme putting culture at its heart.
Councillor Satvir Kaur, Leader of Southampton City Council, said:
“First of all, I want to offer heartfelt congratulations to our colleagues and friends in Bradford on being the winning city and we wish them the very best for 2025.
"For us the bidding process has unlocked a scale of ambition, vision and financial commitment that is unprecedented, with over 150 businesses, cultural and community organisations and 11 neighbouring local authorities committed to transforming the city and wider region through culture.
“We will now put our energies into taking forward the galvanising work of the Southampton2025 Trust to address our needs and become that thriving, dynamic place we know that Southampton can be! And we thank the brilliant team at Southampton2025 Trust for their magnificent work for the city, under its inspiring leader, Claire Whitaker OBE. Our ambition to “MakeitSO” very much lives on.”

Coming together to celebrate carers in Southampton this Carers Week
Southampton City Council and its partners will be marking national Carers Week (6-12 June) by coming together to make carers feel visible and valued. Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.
A carer is anyone, of any age, who provides unpaid support to a relative, partner, child or friend due to illness, disability, frailty, a mental health condition or substance misuse problem.
During Carers Week, Southampton City Council and its partners across the city will be offering a selection of support and activities and highlighting recent initiatives for Carers. Activities include tree planting, sending sunflowers to carers, workshops, and sharing the stories of carers across social media and signposting to support.

 Southampton needs more school governors
We’re currently seeking school governors across the city.
Contrary to popular thought, you don’t have to be a parent, connected to the school in some way or have a background in education to be a governor. It’s a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking to support their local community by providing support for the school and leadership team, drawing on your skills, experience and enthusiasm.
Knowledge of finance, HR, data, IT, H&S, safeguarding and project management to name a few, are all skills that can greatly improve the effectiveness of the school’s governing board and have a positive impact on the education of our pupils.
You’ll be fully trained and supported and join the 250,000 other school governors as the largest volunteer force in the country.
To find out more about becoming a school governor, visit our dedicated webpage for information, where you can download our leaflet or get in touch for an application form.
Southampton City Council teams up with Goal 17 to help transform the lives of young people
Southampton City Council embarked on an exciting mentoring programme working alongside Southampton Football Club’s Saints Foundation, Balfour Beatty and Goal 17 to help transform the lives of young people from the city.
This is the second year of this mentoring programme for young, vulnerable adults that has been run by the team. Those that take part in the programme will receive wellbeing and employability training through the Foundation’s Saints Works programme, alongside one-to-one mentoring from volunteers in the Southampton team.
The Mentors will be taking time away from their normal working agendas to train in mentoring skills and support the young people. This blend of training and support will hopefully see young people transform their prospects with many gaining permanent employment.

World No Tobacco Day: A healthier plant and a healthier you
Yesterday (31 May) was World No Tobacco Day, an annual event by the World Health Organisation to raise awareness of the impact smoking has on the environment as well as our bodies.
Did you know that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts pollute the environment every year? Or that 3.7 litres of water are used to make just one cigarette?
As part of World No Tobacco Day, we want to encourage you to get support to quit smoking not just for a healthier you, but for a healthier planet too!
