mental health

Poor mental health has a high cost for organisations and communities, as well as for individuals and their families

A new report reveals that in the past year, 39% of employees have experienced poor mental health due to work, or where work was a contributing factor. This figure was 36 per cent in both 2017 and 2018.

The leading causes of work-related poor mental health were identified as:

  • Too much pressure
  • Workload impacting on the ability to take leave
  • Lack of support
  • Also negative work relationships and people not feeling able to trust their managers.

The report shares 3 calls to action:

  1. Create good work that enhances mental health for everyone
  2. Acknowledge and support poor mental health, whatever the cause
  3. Publicly report your organisation's wellbeing performance.

walktober - footer

Encourage your staff to walk their way to wellbeing - maybe a team challenge?

My Journey is inviting people to get their steps up and take part in their annual Walktober challenge. This year’s challenge focuses on the positive impact that walking has on our mental wellbeing. My Journey has teamed up with the Go Jauntly walking app to create a series of walking challenges.  After the walk if you can say which challenges you’ve completed and be entered into the prize draw for a family pack of return Red Jet tickets. The deadline for entries is Friday 8 November.

We work best when we keep moving

The British Safety Council is encouraging office based staff  to get up and move about. It's good for their physical and mental health (and not moving is bad for health), and that makes it good for your business as well. You could try -

  • Walking to see someone rather than emailing or phoning
  • Setting an alarm to nudge you into getting up and walking around every 40/60 minutes
  • Having walking or standing meetings and phone calls

Optimistic October

Optimistic October - print for your noticeboard

'Choose to be optimistic, it feels better' Dalai Lama

What happens happens, and we deal with it when it does. Until that moment we can imagine that it will be a'glass half empty' or a'glass half full'.  Neither way of thinking affects what happens, but 'half empty' does spoil whatever else you might be doing...

Here's a taste of October's optimistic actions -

  • 3rd - Start your day with the most important thing on your list
  • 10th - Look for the good intentions in people around you today
  • 15th - Do something to overcome an obstacle you're facing
  • 26th - Ask yourself will this still matter a year from now?
