Asking 'How are you?'
A workshop for managers to help you feel comfortable talking about wellbeing with your staff.
Could you or some of your staff become an Enterprise Adviser? Supported by Enterprise Coordinators, this national scheme aims to increase the number of times that our young people come into contact with workplaces and the world of work.
Get Inspired - businesses are invited to provide an interactive activity related to their organisations/industry for young people to participate in.
Get Inspired Southampton raises awareness and understanding of the career and work opportunities that exist within the great firms in Southampton and the travel to work area. We plan to influence at least 1000 young people aged 13 – 18 years-old in an exciting, fun, interactive event that showcases the work of employers and career opportunities.
Becoming a new parent should be an exciting event...
...but for for up to one in five women this is not the case. Perinatal Mental Illnesses (PMI) such as postnatal depression, are not always recognised and cost society approximately £64,000 per mother and child.
This new EU funded project aims to increase recognition and prevention of PMI and support new families' mental wellbeing. Find out more from the SCC team - PATH (PerinAtal menTal Health).
Cycle September is here! Could your company use this cycling challenge to promote physical fitness?
Similar sized organisations will be competing locally, nationally & globally to see which can get the most people to try riding a bike.
Diabetes UK volunteers will take you through a set of simple questions to evaluate your risk level. There's also advice on steps you can take to reduce your chance of being one of the 12.3 million who are at increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. No blood test involved.
Leisure provider Active Nation will be offering free Mini NHS Health Checks at Bitterne Leisure Centre (Weds 11 September - 10am-4pm) and Chamberlayne Leisure Centre (Mon 9 September - 1-4pm). Active Nation can also be booked for on-site health checks - maybe as part of a wellbeing event?
3. World Suicide Prevention Day - 10 September
This day brings a focus to what we can all do to help prevent people feeling that suicide is their only option.
4. Grievance, disciplinary, suspension or dismissal processes
See the new Wellbeing@Work employer resource on awareness of mental health and the risk of suicide when engaged in grievance, disciplinary, suspension or dismissal processes.
Are you worried about someone?
People in distress often just want to tell their own story in their own way at their own pace – all you have to do is be there and listen – you don’t have to have answers or offer advice.
Taking a minute to reach out to someone can change a life – if you’re in any way worried about someone, ask ‘are you ok?’ and ‘how are you?'. You might need to ask more than once...
Get expert help immediately if you're very worried
If someone says they are going to kill themselves - contact NHS Choices on 111, ring 999 or take them to your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E)
They (or you on their behalf) can contact the Samaritans 24/7 - ring 116123 or email jo@samaritans.org (up to 24hrs response time)
Self-Care September
Self-care is not selfish. You cannot pour from an empty cup and you can't give what you haven't got.
Looking after ourselves and our needs is the necessary first step to being present for our work, colleagues, team, family and friends and September's Action for Happiness Calendar offers an action or perspective for each day. For example:
6th - Remember it's ok not to be ok. We all have difficult days
16th - Notice the things you do well today, however small
22nd - No Plans Day - make time to slow down and be kind to yourself
26th - Find a new way to use one of your strengths or talents today
Print the calendar and pin on Wellbeing Noticeboards or fridges to encourage self-care conversations.
Wellbeing@Work is here to support you
The Wellbeing@Work web pages contains a help yourself toolkit of employer resources including information to 'print & pin' on your Health & Wellbeing Noticeboard and health and wellbeing signposting to support your staff.
We're available to help you think/talk through what you could do to promote, encourage and support health & wellbeing in your place of work.
