Work set to resume on Millbrook Roundabout this Monday
The third phase of work on the £8m reconstruction of Millbrook Roundabout is set to begin this Monday 7 January. It will involve the closure of the southeast section of the roundabout and the southbound section of First Avenue up to the entrance to City Depot and the Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC). There will be no access to Millbrook Roundabout or Dock Gate 20 from Third Avenue.
We expect West Quay Road and parts of the Western Approach to be very busy for this phase of the scheme and there will be delays for those using this route. We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption. Please consider alternative routes into the city if you can.
The Millbrook Roundabout works involve the complete reconstruction of a part of the road network that is vital to the local and national economy.
There are major stability issues with the foundations of the roundabout and this undermines any new surface that is applied. With 2000 HGVs and 36,000 vehicles using the roundabout every day, any new surfacing deteriorates quickly. Given the importance of this roundabout, the rebuilding of the foundations is essential to provide long-term stability for the city’s road network. You can read a full set of FAQs on this project on our website.
Free collection of real Christmas trees
We will be collecting real Christmas trees from the kerbside from Monday 7 January until Friday 18 January 2019. Please make sure your tree is put by the edge of your property, and not blocking the highway, on your revised general waste collection day.
We will be unable to return to collect any trees not put out in time. Alternatively residents that are signed up to the garden waste collection service, can put their Christmas tree in their garden waste bin for collection on their designated collection day (only one tree per household please). Trees can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (please shake off any soil).

Trees for Life is a tree planting event to celebrate the birth of babies born in Southampton. Families are invited to plant a tree for each registered child, and will receive a certificate signed by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton.
The trees will grow to create a new woodland edge, which will benefit the health of the city and provide a valuable habitat for wildlife. Please register in advance to receive your certificate.
Looking for ways to save money on your energy bills this year?
Here are some simple changes you could make, which could really help you save:
Turn down the heating a bit. Did you know that when you reduce your thermostat by just 1°C, you could save £85 – £90 or 10% per year?
Switch all of your light bulbs to energy saving LEDs. They use less electricity, and should last much longer than older style light bulbs.
Check for draughts around windows and doors. Draught-proofing materials are cheap, and can help you to reduce your energy waste.
You could also save by switching energy supplier – it’s always worth checking you’re on the best deal. You can get a quote from Southampton City Council’s CitizEn Energy here, or check out some more energy saving tips.
