Southampton Music Hub and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are delighted to announce the debut concert of Southampton’s first Family Orchestra.
Following six months of free, open-access, family music workshops around the city, the Family Orchestra is celebrating the success of its first season with an exciting family concert at Turner Sims. The concert, taking place from 12.15-1pm on Sunday 2 July 2017, will see performers from the families of the Family Orchestra joined by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s In at the Deep End ensemble: a quintet of musicians consisting of four of the lowest orchestral bass instruments — tuba, trombone, bassoon, double bass — plus percussion.
Matt Brombley, Interim Hub Manager for Southampton Music Hub says: “The first season of the Family Orchestra has been a huge success! We’ve seen over 25 families from across the city taking part, and it’s been incredible to hear stories of how we have inspired players of all ages. We’ve seen brand new players working alongside members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to pick up and try exciting new instruments. We’ve also seen parents and grandparents inspired by the opportunity to play with their family, dusting off old instruments to play for the first time in decades! We’re delighted to celebrate this success with a debut concert at the prestigious Turner Sims concert hall, and we hope families from across the city will come and join us to see and hear the life-changing power of music!”
Ben Jennings, Participation Coordinator for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra says: “For over 120 years, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra have inspired generations of music makers. The Family Orchestra has been a bold new step towards seeing music enhance and transform lives. We’re delighted that our In at the Deep End ensemble will perform alongside the Family Orchestra at this exciting, free, family concert, giving families the chance to hear bass instruments as you've never heard them before!”
