Spitfire 80th Anniversary
Sat 5 March
March 5th 2016 marks 80 years since the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire, which had a vital role defending the UK during the Battle of Britain.
Southampton Airport will host an event that both celebrates the iconic aircraft’s past
whilst looking to its future. A Spitfire will be taking to the skies
from the airport to mark the occasion and will fly over the south coast
for local people and visitors to see at approx 11am.
Solent Sky Museum has arranged for two Spitfires to perform a flypast over Mayflower Park in Southampton at approx 4pm. Solent Sky will also be launching their new exhibition Southampton and the People's Spitfire which focuses on the bombing raids Southampton suffered during the Second World War
as the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy the city’s Spitfire production
facilities.
Veterans of Southampton’s Blitz have been invited to attend the museum to have their memories of this time recorded. The exhibition of over one hundred photographs will display
Southampton’s suffering during the Blitz and the struggle to maintain
Spitfire production in the face of continuing attacks by German bombers and will be on display for 6 months.
The Spitfire flights are subject to weather conditions. Find out more >
