Spotlight: ID Project at Banister Primary School

spotlight

At Banister Primary School, Year 4 students have been taking part in the ID Project - a unique opportunity for pupils to identify and discover how to overcome the barriers that prevent them from achieving at school. Southampton Music Hub partnered with Bricolage Arts for the ten-week project with the aim of getting pupils to develop their creative skills, broaden their horizons and build their self-confidence as they explore ideas of culture and community.

How it worked...

Small group work in class-based sessions was paired with additional after-school sessions to enable students to develop teamwork and leadership skills as part of the school’s curriculum delivery. Students used apps to compose and perform music, record videos, capture illustrations, create animations and then produce multi-media projects to enrich their curriculum work and class topics. The use of iPads enabled students to develop independent learning skills through self-motivated extension tasks, skills sharing, project planning, group assessments and creating their own how-to-guides to share with others.

The final results

The project saw an increase in participation and engagement amongst students. Another positive outcome of the project was seeing students download their favourite apps at home and continue to develop their music and filmmaking beyond the classroom. Listen to some of the student's work.
