Birmingham Airport Maintains Carbon Accreditation for Third Year
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has achieved Level 3 (Optimisation) of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme for the third consecutive year. This prestigious accreditation, awarded to fewer than 30% of European passenger airports, reflects BHX’s ongoing investment in advanced carbon management and engagement with business partners on climate action.
Administered by Airports Council International (ACI), the scheme provides a global carbon management standard, ensuring BHX’s sustainability efforts align with best practices. Recent initiatives include a £10 million 6.8-megawatt solar farm, supplying 100% of peak energy demands, and the installation of a 90kW solar film on the North Terminal roof. The airport has also transitioned to LED lighting, a 100% green electricity tariff, and staff awareness programs to promote conscious energy consumption.
Simon Richards, Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, commented: “We’re proud to maintain our Level 3 accreditation. Moving forward, we’ll work towards Level 4 by reducing indirect emissions and investing in sustainable energy, keeping us on track to become net zero by 2033.”
Birmingham Airport Announces £76.5m Investment Plan
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is investing £76.5m over the next 12 months, the largest annual expenditure to date, with around £1.5m spent per week on enhancements.
Upcoming projects include expanded retail, hospitality, lounges, and terminal refurbishments, as well as runway and airfield upgrades. The plan also improves baggage systems, security, and infrastructure, ensuring seamless operations as passenger numbers reach 14 million in 2025.
CEO Nick Barton stated: “This investment reflects our confidence in continued growth, ensuring efficiency, resilience, and better facilities for passengers and staff.”

Birmingham Airport Achieves Net Zero Milestone
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has announced a significant sustainability achievement: thanks to recent investments in solar energy, the airport has been powering 100% of its required energy usage at certain times of the day. This marks a major step toward net zero carbon operations by 2033.
BHX began its solar journey in 2012 with rooftop panels on the terminal. Last year, it expanded efforts with a £10 million solar farm featuring over 12,000 panels. To maximize energy efficiency, the airport also installed 90kWh lightweight solar film on the North Terminal, reducing heat absorption and improving sustainability.
Beyond environmental benefits, the transition to solar energy reduces reliance on the grid, helping mitigate market price volatility. Recognizing these efforts, Birmingham Airport was recently shortlisted for the Energy Transition Impact Award at the Midlands Sustainability Excellence Awards 2025.
Simon Richards, Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, stated: "The spring sunshine has allowed us to sustainably generate 100% of our peak daytime power needs, saving over 500 tonnes of carbon since launching our solar array last year. This milestone underscores our commitment to reducing emissions and driving sustainable innovation."

DS-Movement and European Travel Commission Urge Destinations to Get Ahead of New EU Green Rules
At IMEX Frankfurt 2025, the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) and the European Travel Commission (ETC) launched A Destination’s Guide to the New EU Sustainability Regulations, aimed at helping tourism and event destinations adapt to new legal frameworks.
Upcoming regulations—including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGTD), and the Green Claims Directive (GCD)—will require increased transparency, accountability, and sustainability management. This white paper provides a roadmap for compliance, risk management, and new business opportunities.
“These regulations aren’t just about compliance; they’re about leadership,” said Guy Bigwood, CEO of GDS-Movement. “Destinations that act now will enhance their reputation and secure long-term success.”
The paper outlines three key steps: ✅ Understanding compliance roles in the new EU directives ✅ Aligning marketing claims and destination management strategies ✅ Leveraging early adoption to boost reputation, funding, and visitor trust
It also highlights the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME), which can help smaller organisations access green financing and improve sustainability leadership.
To further support the transition, GDS-Movement and ETC will host a webinar on 10th-11th June 2025, providing practical next steps.
For more details and to download the white paper, visit GDS-Movement.
