Morris into May
May the Fourth Be With You…
Curtailed by storms, the stars of our famous Wassail, return to the Gardens for an afternoon of May Morris Madness on 4th May. Enjoying drop-in and Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens, punters will witness a merry dance of Beorma Morris. Encouraged to dress in white, a May Monarch will then be chosen from the visitors who will lead the forces of light (Summer) against the forces of the dark (Winter) in a veritable dance off, chasing the folkloric Winter away. We will also welcome Dan Mercer for a falconry arena display. Given the date, there may also be an appearance of lightsabres…
Blossoms
Though the climate is changing, May will see our Inner and Outer Heritage Orchards full of blossom. Coinciding with the launch of our ‘Sparkling Cream Teas’, we are encouraging people to bring picnics and spend a relaxing few hours amongst wildflowers and orchard blossom.
Whitsun Half Term
The May Half Term will see a range of family-based activities across most of the weekdays, including Hapa Zome - a Japanese form of translating the pattern of leaves and flowers into sheets of linen and cotton - and make your own bird feeders. People can then look forward to the children’s falconry experience towards the end of the week, where our friend Dan Mercer will have a host of raptors to entertain families.
Looking Ahead
As our Summer Season kicks off, we are looking forward to a range of music and theatre to enjoy the Gardens with. Digbeth Dining Club returns to us, as well as our hosting of the Vegan Garden Party and Japanese Day - there is a host of events to get excited about!

‘BELONGINGS’: New Midlands International Artists Collective launches with group exhibition that explores ideas of heritage, home, journeys and identity
Opening on 21 May at Solihull’s Courtyard Gallery, Belongings is an inspiring group exhibition showcasing the work of 20 diverse artists from the West Midlands. These artists, who recently formed the Midlands International Artists Collective (MIAC), bonded during Solihull College & University Centre’s inaugural ‘Get Gallery Ready’ bootcamp.
Exploring themes of belonging, identity, journey, heritage, and multiculturalism, the exhibition will feature a variety of works—including paintings, photography, weaving, textiles, ceramics, and mixed-media pieces.
The notion of home as a place of belonging emerges strongly in Belongings. Fiona Carr’s paintings incorporate floral wallpaper, evoking domestic histories, while Sandra Palmer (Brummy Artist) presents digital collages that frame multiple senses of self. Daya Bhatti stitches stories of South Asian heritage into traditional garments, reflecting layered identities, and Hasret Brown’s geometric paintings embrace Turkish influences through centuries-old artistic traditions.
The exhibition also challenges spaces where individuals feel alienated. Artist Editoriat explores public spaces where women often feel unsafe, using text and imagery to highlight issues of belonging.
Curated by Birmingham-based art historian Ruth Millington, Belongings embodies the power of collective artistic collaboration. The exhibition culminates the ‘Get Gallery Ready’ bootcamp, supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Brian Prangle, one of the exhibiting artists, remarks: "This exhibition is proof of how artists can build meaningful creative communities. It’s more than art on the walls—it's about connection, shared journeys, and finding a place of belonging."

RECORD PASSENGER YEAR FOR BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT
Birmingham Airport (BHX) had a record year in 2024/25 with over 13 million passengers during 2024/25, a new peak for the transport hub. Latest figures issued by BHX reveal that 13.004 million passengers travelled through the airport in the 2024/25 financial year.
The figure was bolstered by a record March, which saw over 950,000 passengers travelling through the airport, a 3.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Birmingham Airport remains on track to exceed this figure this year with close to 14m passengers forecast to travel through the transport hub in 2025/26.
To accommodate this continual growth, the airport has announced further investment in both terminal facilities and infrastructure to improve the customer experience including an additional baggage carousel in the north terminal, a reconfiguration and expansion of the south immigration area and two further security screening lanes. Whilst operational areas and capacity is top of the development list the airport recognises the experience that it provides to its customers and as part of this a new food and beverage area, to cater for the increase in customers, is planned to open in 2026.
Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport said: “It’s been another record year for Birmingham Airport with more customers than ever choosing to travel through BHX. This new record, which finished with a record March, shows BHX is on its way to its forecasted passenger milestone of 18m by 2033.
“Construction works on our infrastructure and terminal facilities have already commenced to accommodate this growth as we further enhance our customer experience including two additional security search areas expanded terminal facilities and new concessions.”

Birmingham Airport Achieves Net Zero Milestone
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has announced a significant sustainability achievement: thanks to recent investments in solar energy, the airport has been powering 100% of its required energy usage at certain times of the day. This marks a major step toward net zero carbon operations by 2033.
BHX began its solar journey in 2012 with rooftop panels on the terminal. Last year, it expanded efforts with a £10 million solar farm featuring over 12,000 panels. To maximize energy efficiency, the airport also installed 90kWh lightweight solar film on the North Terminal, reducing heat absorption and improving sustainability.
Beyond environmental benefits, the transition to solar energy reduces reliance on the grid, helping mitigate market price volatility. Recognizing these efforts, Birmingham Airport was recently shortlisted for the Energy Transition Impact Award at the Midlands Sustainability Excellence Awards 2025.
Simon Richards, Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, stated: "The spring sunshine has allowed us to sustainably generate 100% of our peak daytime power needs, saving over 500 tonnes of carbon since launching our solar array last year. This milestone underscores our commitment to reducing emissions and driving sustainable innovation."
For more details on Birmingham Airport’s Net Zero policy, visit their corporate website.
