Easter at Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens
Celebrating the Gardens
April begins with a celebration of the ‘local gal’, Edith Holden, of ‘Diary of an Edwardian Lady’ fame. Enjoying a talk about her, there will then be opportunities throughout the day to indulge in flower arranging, drawing, painting; a real chance to be creative… with artists and leaders to support.
Our popular General History Tours also begin next month. These gentle meanders around our historic gardens will provide the chance to explore their story and hear how they fit into our local and national heritage narrative.
Eastertide
Ever in demand, we are thankful once again to play host to ‘Colonel Pickering’s Regmente of Foote.’ Encamped across Easter Weekend, they provide the centrepiece to our Easter offer with the sights and smells of the Seventeenth Century. Complete with pikes and musket fire, their presence brings a bit of the raucous English Civil War to our usually serene Gardens!
Free with entry across Easter Saturday and Sunday.
Families can also enjoy a host of activity-based sessions, from minibeast hunting, to clay workshops. Have the freedom to get close to Mother Nature in a safe, responsible and creative way. See our website: https://www.castlebromwichhallgardens.org.uk/events-calendar/
Looking forward
By the time the Easter holidays are over, our heritage orchards will be blooming, providing us with a wonderful Springtime backdrop as we look ahead to Morris Dancing into May…

Birmingham Airport Celebrates Most Waste Efficient Year Ever on Global Recycling Day
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is celebrating its most waste efficient year ever with its recycling rate for terminal operations exceeding 75%.
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is marking its most waste-efficient year, recycling 76% of terminal waste—its highest rate to date. This success is attributed to the Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU), introduced last year, which has prevented over 1,200 tonnes of waste from becoming non-recyclable. The unit's data-driven waste management approach has significantly surpassed BHX’s previous recycling goal of 65%, making it one of the most sustainable UK airports. The MSU also enables reuse and donation of certain items left behind by passengers. Over 36 tonnes of items such as toiletries and pushchairs were donated to local charities, including Let’s Feed Brum and St Basils, within the past year. Tom Denton, Head of Sustainability at BHX, emphasized the MSU's positive impact, noting a 20% increase in recycling rates in just a year. As the world observes Global Recycling Day, BHX encourages travellers to consider permitted items to reduce waste. Passengers are reminded of liquid restrictions (no more than 100ml per item) and urged to use reusable bottles, which can be refilled at free water stations. Additionally, lost items contribute to waste. The airport advises contacting Luggage Point for lost belongings, reducing unclaimed property. Learn more about BHX’s sustainability efforts on their corporate website

Solihull Students Champion Wildlife Conservation at Award-Winning Hope Coppice
Students from Solihull College joined Friends of Hope Coppice and the #LoveSolihull team at Hope Coppice to undertake a wildlife survey of the site. Hope Coppice was recently awarded the Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag ‘Best of the Best’ award for the Best Biodiversity Habitat Creation Project in the UK, as well as becoming the 17th Green Flag for the borough.
The students, who are studying wildlife conservation as part of their BSC course, conducted a baseline survey of the site to gather data about the variety of species that call Hope Coppice home.
As well as providing valuable data for the site, the survey will also assist the students with their module assessments, as well as giving practical, field-based experience.
The group hope to continue logging the abundance of wildlife that can be found on site, ensuring it continues to thrive through ongoing development projects. Current sightings consist of Mistle thrush, Song thrush, Dunnock, Wren, Great tit, Eurasian nuthatch, Common Frog, and a variety of tree and flora species.
The Friends of Hope Coppice are always looking for individuals to join their group and support them in events, bulb planting and other development projects. If you are interested in joining the group, contact Love Solihull at Lovesolihull@solihull.gov.uk
