Update on the Solihull Gateway Project

Work is progressing well on the Solihull Gateway Project in Solihull town centre which involves highway improvements on Station Road and Poplar Road.

The Project is split into four stages, with Stage 3 due to commence on 21 June 2015. Read on to find out what work has taken place during Stage 2 (which covers the area from Ladbrokes to the National Express Travel Shop), which began on 19 April:

  • Work in the Stage 1 area on Station Road (Jimmy Spices to Ladbrokes) is complete apart from minor works to install new street furniture (seats and litter bins).
  • Paving has been laid in the 'Solihull Gateway style' to the new public space fronting the White Swan and the Flute and Flagon bars and four new trees have been planted.

  • Temporary bus stops are in operation adjacent to the service road on Station Road (this has temporarily restricted the availability of some of the parking spaces along the service road).
  • The existing street lighting along Station Road and Poplar Road has been upgraded with modern LED energy efficient lamps.
  • Underground services have been moved or protected to accommodate the extended bus bay.
  • In the Stage 2 area, the existing bus shelters on Station Road have been removed and replaced with new, larger bus shelters.
  • Post boxes have been repositioned.
  • New paving is being laid throughout the area.
  • Three new tree pits to house new tree planting have been installed.

Due to the location of numerous service cables and ducts in the area assigned for the new bus shelters, there has been a slight delay to the completion of Stage 2 while a review and update of the design of the bus shelter foundations was undertaken.

To allow the Project to keep moving forward a decision was taken to progress paving replacement works outside Norwich House (Futon shop) in Poplar Road. This area was originally planned to be carried out at a later date (Stage 4). This slight change in the sequence of the works will help to ensure we are still on target to meet the projected completion date for the Project.

Upcoming work - Stage 3

On completion of the new bus shelters in the Stage 2 works area in Station Road and the laying of new paving, work will move to the Stage 3 area in Poplar Road (Coventry Building Society to HSBC Bank) which is highlighted in green on the map opposite.

Work will also be carried out to replace some of the paving in the carriageway. Please note that the current arrangements for vehicle access will be maintained.

The existing pelican (push button) crossing at the High Street junction has recently been removed and a temporary push button crossing provided near to the current location. This will be maintained until the new zebra crossings in Station Road and Poplar Road are complete and available for use.

Changes to bus services during Stage 3

Bus services using the three existing bus stops  (SC, SD, SE) and temporary bus stop T1 in Poplar Road will be moved to the new bus stops (three new shelters and one pole) in Station Road. The shelters will be located near to Ladbrokes, Shipley's Amusements and Nationwide Bank. It is anticipated that this will happen on Sunday 21 June. Advance notices are being provided to ensure bus passengers are aware of this change.

During Stage 2, bus stops SA and SB (outside Santander and Nationwide banks respectively) on Station Road were temporarily moved to outside the Hogs Head (now the Flute and Flagon) and the White Swan on Station Road. This arrangement will remain in place for Stage 3.

Furthermore, a leaflet detailing the temporary bus changes during the Project is available at the West Midlands Travel shop on Station Road or can be downloaded from www.solihull.gov.uk/solihullgateway.
